HDMI is a technology before its time during its time. It's had several modifications, including 1.0, 1.1, 2.1, 3.1 and so forth. While the video quality has always been 1080p, the audio has undergone several changes during the years.

It's possible that the HDMI port on your laptop isn't designed for audio at all. I would recommend looking for an optical, or try jacking your stereo up to the line out. Even if you were somehow successful getting the audio into your tv, HDTV audio is poor at best.

Extend a splitter cable from your headjack to the stereo with the red/white cables. it'll do you well, and most receivers can pro logic ii the audio to make it come through 5.1 quality (or comparable)

I take it you are using your laptop to watch DVD etc on your HD TV. I had the same problem where the sound was coming out my laptop. I solved this by going in to the sound options on my computer (which you can access in your control panel) then set your sound default as HDMI. This should solve the problem, just remember to set the default back to the laptops speakers when you are finished using it on your TV.
I hope that helps.

I connected my HP8510p via HDMI to my LCD TV and got after a few trials both: Picture and sound!
That's how i've done it:
-Go to the control panel
-Sounds
-Rightclick on the so called "Digital Output Device (HMDI)" and set it as default(same as Realtek HD Audio)

now the sound comes perfectly out of TV speakers!

/edit: Of course you probably also have go to your TV's options and set as sound input the HDMI port.

i was searching for the same thing and saw ur post...... this might help..

There is no drop down available in Sounds only realtek, even when I have the HDMI plugged in! Samsung R720 and a Samsung HD TV. Windows XP.

Please be the one who just might have an idea of how to get sound out of your tv. Yes I did have sound from my (42" LG TV) the first time i conected it to my computer (Vista 64bit), which was good and also a good picture it seemed any flim I put on played OK. But now since I've had to format my computer(some other problem) I still get a good picture but only get back ground sound but no lead talking (well you can hear some thing but its muffled)
I've tied loads of drivers and all that seams to do is mess the computer up, so I dont fancy going down that root again. The HMDI thingie my computer did not reconise it, so I didn't get very far with that I've also tied Vista Audio Changer, That got a dig in the ribs and all. On the display settings it find my tv but when pluging in to my sound card, nothing comes up on the moniter like when you've just pluged in to a TV.

You do need to make sure to disable any other output devices on the list to get this to work :D

Blue Ray movie, Hdtv trough hdmi laptop to external Lcd flat screen tv - no sound problem.
Solution:
1. Pause the movie
2. restart the computer
3. Hit play movie (in some cases, you'll have to turn off/on the tv)

You can get disabled playback devices such as hdmi or whatever else your computer has by opening the playback devices and right clicking in the space in the box and click 'show disabled devices.

I did all of this, and my sound still won't come through the t.v. speakers. My laptop (under playback devices) shows that the hdmi output is default and working (even has the soud decibles moving when I'm playing something), but my LG tv still doesn't have any sound. I can't find anything in the tv menu about it.

Hey guys,
I just figured this out!

If you have sounds already playing on the laptop, then you must switch your default to the HDMI then go and re open the program ie itunes. Any other program playing sounds on ur laptop speakers will continue to play through the lap top speakers...

On VISTA do this
Right click your screen
go to personalize
on the left there is an option "connect to a projectror or external display"
Click the speaker picture, and set the default to HDMI by right clicking it and selecting make default.
Close your media programs, and then re-open them and hit play..

Presto! Sound will work!
This wasnt listed in my manual either i had to figure it out.
HOPE this helps, any questions email me.

I solved this by opening PowerDVD and from the menu going to :
Settings->audio settings->speaker environment. It was set on "2 speaker". I selected "HDMI" from the pull down list. Sound now came only from the TV. I'm paranoid so I don't turn the computer or the TV on until the HDMI cable is plugged in. Remember to put the setting back to "2 speaker" before you unplug the HDMI cable after watching. I couldn't open PowerDVD afterwards when I forgot this step.

Ok people. The solution has already been stated several times in this thread. It's by changing you're default audio to HDMI.

If it doesn't work, accept the fact that your HDTV is either not compatible with your laptop's HDMI output or your HDTV is unable to generate sound at all, only picture, if connected from a laptop's hdmi to youir hdtv's hdmi. Either way, there is no solution for your "no sound o nly picture" problem.

Ok people?!?

Wow, that was a tad dickish wasn't it WiseGay? Apparently this is NOT the end-all be-all solution.

My issue is similar. It worked before, then sporadically, then not at all. My TV handles all of my other HDMI inputs perfectly. My laptop (Acer Aspire 6930) has an HDMI port that transports both 1080p video and hi-def audio. I switch the audio to an HDMI default and restarted the applications. No luck. I've restarted the laptop, and no luck.

I've just noticed that I can get everything working PERFECTLY if I run though the Windows Media Center program and instead of HDMI use the toslink option. It works and sounds great!!

However, no sound through the browsers (IE, Firefox and Chrome) when I try to play Hulu, Youtube, etc. Is Windows specifically blocking sound through all other avenues so they can use it solely for Windows Media Center? Hmm...

I followed these steps (setting the HDMI as the default) and now there is no sound period. It is not coming through the laptop or the tv. Any suggestions?

I find this most frustrating because the sound came through the tv the first 10 or so times I hooked the laptop up to it w/ the HDMI cable....

I have been chasing this same problem for several days. None of the recommended solutions have worked to enable the HDMI cable between my Sony Media PC and the Philips TV. So, be sure the HDMI cable is connected and that the HDMI input on the TV is showing the correct type of input ("PC" on my Philips) and of course that your PC is on ;-)

In Windows 7 this is what worked:

Select the Playback devices
(My HDMI device was listed as "not connected")
Select the HDMI device and right click "Properties"
On the next screen for the device click the Properties button
On the next screen for the driver click the "Change Settings" button
Select the Driver Tab, Then go to the "Update Driver" button and select "Browse my computer"
You should see a "High Definition Audio Driver" listed; mine was listed but the driver installed was the standard IDT driver. Install the High Definition driver and then test the system; it should now be working. If you leave the screen open while you test it you can still "Roll back" the driver
Assuming your system is now working, close the various screens and sit back and enjoy your HDMI vision and *sound* :D

All my systems are Windows 7; I suspect you will find a similar option on a Vista machine.

Good luck!

Thanks rkd933!

As soon as I update to Windows 7 in the next couple of weeks I'll give this a go! I'd hate to get it working on Vista and then have to go through it all again when I get Windows 7!

Truly appreciate it, will let you know how it goes...

Hi guys! Any news?

I've got the same problem. I'm trying to connect my Samsung r70 laptop (Windows 7 on board) with Philips 8404.

When I choose HDMI as a primary output audio channel the TV starts to play sound from ANALOG channel (tv tunner). I wasn't able to find on where to choose an audio source.

Oke, all the suggestions you guys name are fine bud, I've updated my laptop from xp to seven.
Before when I was working with xp the sound true hdmi worked fine, I didn't have to change anything. After installing seven it didn't worked any more.

I use my laptop for a lot of things and don't want to change the audio setting all the time. maybe it's a seven mistake I don't know sins it is very new. I think this can be solved with a better solution. I hope somebody knows how to fix it! Let me know... I'll check this forum from time to time.

I finally can figure it out how to get the sound to my LCD TV. All you have to do is changing your laptop screen resolution. Change it to the higest. First, it was @ 1280 x 720. When I changed to 1280 x 800, bummmp...sound went through. Good luck all.

Hi, I contact sony support, and I finally got my problem SOLVED!,
INSTRUCTIONS:
1.- As it was told before, get the image only playing in the TV (NOT in the laptop display).
2.- Go to sound icon in the task bar (lower right) click right button, choose playback devices
3.- Mark DIGITAL OUTPUT DEVICE (HDMI) and click in the PROPERTIES BUTTON
4,- Choose SUPPORTED FORMATS tab
5.- UNCHECK: - DTS Audio
6.- UNCHECK: - Dolby Digital
7.- UNCHECK: - Microsoft WMA Pro Audio
This worked for me watching Blue Ray with InterVideo WinDVD BD for VAIO
Hope it works!,
Thanks,
Gus

I had the same problem, everything worked correctly but no sound on my TV. I tried to set as default my hdmi (to tv) for sound , tried to enable or disable codecs, etc...

The solution, was to check the site of my sound card manufacturer (Realtek), where I have found an update for ati hdmi, installed that driver and everything worked perfectly. Seems like before I had a default windows vista driver which wasn't good enough.

So, check for a driver update.
