HOW TO I GET NETWORK ON MY PS3

Hello,
I am having problems getting network on my ps3, i have the ethernet cable thingy, and i have the linksys modem, but i cant seem to get the network on my ps3. I have done everything for the network settings, and everytime i go to the internet connections, the connection keeps on saying failed everytime i try easy or custom.....SO WHAT TO I DO??? I just need help with everything step by step.

Configuration: Windows Vista
Internet Explorer 7.0
