IF you have a wireless router for your broadband connection then you can add a wireless adapter to the desktop. They come in two types:
1. an internal card that requires you to open up the case and install the card
2. a USB adapter that plugs into your desktop's USB port.
#1 will probably have a better/bigger antenna - needed if the desktop is at the far end of the house.
If you really want a wired connection then
1. buy a "crossover" cable and a Ethernet card for the desktop (a standard cable is NOT made to connect two computers directly)
2. enable "internet sharing" on the laptop to share the signal.
The wifi method requires the least work on your part.
Good Luck
