Hello,

Everytime I start windows XP & log into my settings, My computer freezes & i have to go into safe mode. I have no clue why & have done numerous scans for viruses, spyware, etc. I have come up with nothing. I can't afford it to be crashing before next semester starts.

IF you have the XP CD you can do a repair/install - go to this sit5e for instructions:

Do you get any messages for errors?

Repair/reinstall is never a good option, as it doesn't affect programs/files you may have which are causing the problem.

Well like it started one time & then it didn't freeze but then like 2 minutes later a blue screen popped up and said we are shutting down wndows XP because we have encountered a problem. It was like saying its shutting down so no further damage is done.

Alright, well if you want to figure out what the error is, you can go to Start>Right click on My Computer>Properties> Advanced tab up top> Startup and Recovery Settings> System Failure> Uncheck Automatically Restart.

But when the error pops up next time, write down what it says, and then shut the power off manually. (Hold down the power button till it powers down.) Leaving it on too long while there is an error may cause damage, depending on the error. Good Luck!

Did you installed anything before the problem strikes? if you did, that might be the source. if you can go to safe mode, try uninstalling it there. sometimes game mods does this. if i didn't answer your problem, well, sorry because i am searching solutions for my computer too.. peace out.

Hi guys
i have recently formatted 3 computers at work a friend introduced me to Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 trial version
which seems to work very well and easy to use tools to lock noobs out of some websites ^v^
except i also have been getting random and startup freezing on 2 of them both of which have wireless
the 3rd com is connected by Lan cable and only had a problem with it when our hub was connecting and dropping every minute and had to reboot the Hub, from then on i had no problems with the lan cable connected computer
On another forum they talked about Kaspersky 7 try's to connect to the internet while the computer is booting and for wireless coms as they don't obtain an IP until windows has started so its can cause it to crash
they said the way to fix it was to switch the updates in the Kaspersky > settings >My Update Center from automatic to manual. But for me that dose not explain why the computer has been running for 5 to 50 mins then freezes?
I had set all of the computers to a set time update once per day at midday, since workers on computers are complete noobs and don't know the meaning of computer maintenance
( i will try the Manual settings tomorrow and see how things go)
another point i also installed Kaspersky on my home computer, it connected by lan cable and i know my computer checks during boot for lan connection and i set it in the bios if its not connected the boot will halt so i can see the issue straight away
as for the computers they are all different models the wireless one have different graphic cards
i did see one post about disabling the graphic card on startup (Nvidia 6200) didn't work. lol at that point i was willing to try anything.
i also turned on Kaspersky > Settings > Options > Concede resources to other applications, even though they have just been formatted and clean and fast, and yep didn't help at all
so yeah try the manual updates settings for wireless computers check your router, hub etc for connectivity before rebooting your computer and hopefully it will work ok
but like a said earlier in my post for my that dosn't explain why it freezes after windows has started and established a connection, unless its some obscure reason like the host server for Kaspersky updates crashed or was down for maintenance or for any other reason there was a conection loss (actuly that might explain why they both freezed at the same time) Unfortunately i had previously turned off the computer connected by lan cable, other wise that would have made that theory conclusive for me.
and still I do have the Updates set to a specific time not 6 hours later when we started to have the problems.
so sadly i guess i still have more questions than answers

Oh year sorry i am trying to solve the problem i am having with Kaspersky anti virus & Internet Security 2010
so if you don't have Kaspersky on your system nothing i was talking about would make any sense
however for XP users you can view logged events in windows, i don't know if the same for Vista as i don't use it because its a pile of poop, a slow greedy pile of poop!
anyways to view your event viewer:
Start > Control Panel > change to Classic View > open Administrative Tools > open Event Viewer,
also you can check in:
right click My Computer > Manage > System tools > you can see your event viewer there too

If you can't see any events make sure if you have a cleaning program like CCleaner that you un-tick Run on startup (in some cases if you have logs ticked in the cleaner it will delete all the log files) depends on what program you are using.
also if you can not see your log file check:
right click My Computer > Properties > click on the Advanced Tab > click on Error Reporting and make sure your error reporting is turned on and tick windows operating system and programs
however if you want to watch a specific program you can :
right click My Computer > Properties > click on the Advanced Tab > click on Error Reporting> click on the Chose Programs > tick All Programs In List > then add and tick the ones you want to watch for.

there you can browse through the different types of events look at the ones closest to the time of the fault and with luck you'll a yellow exclamation mark or red cross then copy past the data code in to google and if your really lucky you might find a post that can solve your problem or at least inform you on whats happening inside your PC
If your PC keeps rebooting from system failures and you think your going to fry your com try:
right click My Computer > Properties > click on the Advanced Tab > click on the startup and recovery settings > untick system failure Atomatically Restart

oh just a little gripe might me because i'm using google chrome i donno yet but the text in the forum is not conforming to the text table, so you have to copy & paste the post into a text document to be able to read them properly
which sucks

well i hope that helps some people or at least to help them understand a little more about their PC's

For anyone with this problem.

I've just come across a new FREE application called 'Process Lasso' which works by monitoring running applications and if one or more of them starts trying to hog all the CPU RAM capacity then Process Lasso will choke it back to a level where the computer can still manage to function.
It keeps a log of events that it has throttled back, so that although it doesn't actually fix the root of the problem it WILL show you which processes tend to run wild and therefore may need looking at.

As I say, it's free (for home use) so why not give it a try? It might at least keep your computer limping along until you figure out what's causing the freezing (virus, application conflicts, etc).

It's at: http://www.bitsum.com/prolasso.php

I'm the 'McBob' that posted above, but without registering in the forum. I've since found that a 'McBob' already exists so now I'm registered as 'Kalamazoo'.

I just wanted to say that if you are on Vista and have Process Lasso set to run at startup you may need to uncheck 'UAC' (User Account Control) in Control Panel, or Windows may only allow you to start PL manually. (which may be too late for you if you have severe freezing.)

I'm using the 'Beta' version (which has the CPU throttling) and it has so far run without any problems.

Another thought about 'freezing.'

If you find you can run ok in 'Safe Mode' but not in normal mode, you might try going into Start > Run > type 'MSconfig' and press 'Enter.'

Try disabling 'Services' and 'Startup' items and restarting. Then enable the items one or two at a time and restarting again etc, etc. When the computer starts freezing again you will hopefully know what was causing the problem! (Assuming it was not a worm/virus etc)
.

What if the problem is a virus? Do I need to take it to a computer shop to get fixed?

I had the same problem with my toshiba and it had XP what we found out later was that it was a battery/motherboard issue....Also, in MY case it was the mother board that had been fried because it kept restarting itself and wouldnt come into regular mode and would only start in safe mode....In this particular case you can reformat the drive and reinstall and that should help the problem.
