I had my sound quit after Vista updated twice. It would say that a 'Sound card was not installed' when I clicked on the speaker in the bottom right corner. Try this before anything else:
-Open Start menu, open control panel
-Scroll down to 'Device Manager', click 'View Hardware and Devices'
-Double click 'Sound, video and game controllers', then double click 'Realtek High Definition Audio'
-This will open the properties menu for your audio. At the top of the box, click 'driver'
-Finally, click the 'Disable' button, and then the 'Enable' button afterward to reset your audio system.
I hope that works for everyone. Reply to LegsOnLegs.com | 27 emmaa, on Mar 18, 2009 4:19:10 pm GMTTHANKYOU!!!!

| 30 BT, on Apr 19, 2009 12:31:04 am BSTListen, honey, I don't have Realtek. I have Sigmatel. Is there anyone who knows how to replace the Sigmatel C-Major audio driver Reply to BT | 40 Vijay, on Jun 27, 2009 1:47:01 pm BSTBuddy did you ever get to fix your Sigmatel problem, Tried everything including below steps.
1. Re intsalled R171789.exe through windows update. (apparently the version 5.10.0.5515 is the final one :( )
2. Enabling/disabling audio device (sigma tel) through device manager etc.,
This is my problem:
1.The sound hear from local system is pretty ok, sometime skips. Even sound recorder is working fine.
2. When I use the same mic/headphone over IM's (GTalk/yahoo/Skype) I get to hear random scratchy noise nothing but that...truly frustrating experience.
As im totally dependent on voice chat over the internet, this has been a depressing one. Please provide help if you have a solution.
Thanks in advance!!! Reply to Vijay |

| 45 adam, on Aug 24, 2009 3:08:37 pm BSTI also have Vista and my sound wont work on my Sony VAIO. I tried this solution, but I do not have realtek, all it says is that I have a High Definition Audio Device. I tried to disable and enable, but still nothing. Any help? Reply to adam | I,ve tried everything, so in the end sent laptop back to hp, they got back to me saying they have taken the keyboard off and it would cost me £267.67 p to fix the no audio device installed, the tehnician on the phone said there has been a spillage down the keyboard, do you want it fixing or sending back, i had it returned unfixed and removed the keyboard myself and could see no evidene of spillage into the keyboard, i knew this as liquid has never been near it, still no audio device installed, conexant high definition audio. Also, if liquid had been spilt into laptop, surely only the audio device would not short out as i think it,s built into modem card and my internet works fine and the card is on the bottom of laptop under an access panel which hovers below the mother board and keyboard on a bracket.
