A private virtual network. Often used in companies to secure their communication but can also be used for gaming. For example if you and your friends want to play a game in the local network but you are not in the same physical location. Then you can set up a vpn with your friends and still play "locally". Also often used to encrypt your communication with the internet and gain back some of your privacy. Check for example: https://traceless.me they have a free trial to test the VPN and a one-click software. There is also completely free VPN's but better to stay away from those.
