Hp Pavilion dv7 Half left side of screen appears lighter color

My brother gave me this laptop which was maybe used once or twice (still has plastic on parts of it). Half of the left side of the screen appears to be lighter colored than the rest of the screen and it is very annoying to look at as the color is not all the same. Is this something I can fix by adjusting the color or is there a problem with it? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

It appears to be a defective screen or video chip. Can you test using an external monitor? If the external monitor works OK then you confirm it's a problem with the screen. If it doesn't work then the problem is probably with the video chip.

Thanks for your reply and trying to help. I guess i'll have to take it to be repaired. Was hoping there was a simple solution to the problem. Is it worth having fixed I wonder? Do you think it'll cost me a lot to fix?

Yes, it might cost more to fix than if you buy a new computer or tablet. Probably $100 just to look at it.
