malwarebytes its freeware unless you've upgrade to the paid version?
malwarebytes isn't an on-access scanning antivirus solution and isn't a suitable product to be used in replacement for one. Malwarebytes only updates and scans for threats when you tell it to.
if you're looking for free antivirus solutions which can protect you then i would recommend things like AVG Free, Avast Free and Microsoft Security Essentials.
