| 1 xpcman, on Mar 1, 2009 6:05:28 pm GMTYou can try this:
BUT HERE IS THE BEST WAY AND EASIEST
Creating a new Admin on Mac Os X:
Here’s how to reset your OS X password without an OS X CD.
the Working solution for me was to create a new admin
you can create new admin like this by deleting a specific file.
You need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
1. Reboot
2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
* mount -uw /
* rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
* shutdown -h now
4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!
Apple stores wont reset it for you. Computer shops may charge you $50 to $200 trying to reinstall the Mac and failing at end. Reply to xpcman | 2 Vince, on Mar 30, 2009 1:33:03 am BSTOnce I get to the command part every time I hit the enter bottom says file or command not found, or invalid should I include the star symbol every time? because I try without it and still not let me to continue seems that this instructions should me more in detail and even more since we enter a very detail portion of the operative system, I wish you could guide me more in detail in what to do to accomplish this administrator set up, thank you. Reply to Vince | 7 mediadude, on May 3, 2009 5:37:36 pm BSTVince, I just went through the process after loading Leo over Jaguar. Never use passwords, but long ago i must have entered oned while installing Jaguar! Forgot it, naturally. I used the unix command lines just as published here without the star/asterisks. Worked fist time.
By now you've figured it out another way, but it's nice to see a post like this that is so helpful. Reply to mediadude | 48 yukka, on Jun 25, 2009 7:47:32 am BSTI got 2 problems.....and i was wondering if you can help me...
i got a desktop that has a my password but i don't remember it,also when i turned it on it says "you need to restart your computer. hold down the power button for several seconds or press the reset button." i did so and when i did it it says, "to continue booting, type "mac-boot" and press return. i did so but it showed me the first sentence again. i tried to follow the recommendations i saw at mac store it says instead typing "mac-boot" type "reset-Nvram" and press return then type "reset-all" and press return but it didn't work, it showed me the same message again.i don't have i don't have the disc

| 4 AgentV, on Apr 7, 2009 11:20:29 pm BSTI just tried this yesterday on a new MacBookPro 15" with 10.5.6 . It didn't work and obviously corrupted the startup. There has to be something that was missing.
There was an admin user with a password, I booted into single user mode and typed exactly what you had there.
All I got when I rebooted but the spinning apple boot symbol. Reply to AgentV | 5 Mercenary, on Apr 21, 2009 9:05:59 pm BSTThis worked great for me Thanks a Milli'!!! Reply to Mercenary |
| 14 DX, on May 14, 2009 8:46:09 am BSTThats exactly whats happening to me now, now i cant even log into my desktop? how did u fix it? this mount -uw thing have messed up my macbook pro!? Reply to DX | 59 chef h, on Jul 30, 2009 8:50:25 am BSTI tried the mount -uw/ for my macbook pro because I no longer have the original disc. Now my computer just sits at a blue screen with a continuous scolling wheel and then it will go away for a second and come back again. One message I did notice while trying to do the mount -uw/ option was the following:
it keeps scrooling Mach communication failed: (ipc/mig) server died
mDNSKeychainGetSecrets failed error2301 CFArrayRef 00000000
mach_msg_server: (ipc/send) invalid memory
There was more to the message than just this message but I didn't have enough time to get it all.
doesn't look good...i think it's toasted.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me. I'd hate to think I have a very expensive paper weight. Reply to chef h |

| 52 tech idiot, on Jul 3, 2009 2:48:06 pm BSTI wonder if creating a new admin account and deleting the old one will mean, a) I'll lose all the photos, songs, data i saved on the old admin account; b) i'll lose the software on the old amin account, such as the entire Microsoft (Word, Excel, etc) for Mac package, which i don't have any backup of.
Also, while i'm at it, is it possible to backup the Microsoft for Mac programs on an external hard drive and reinstall it into the computer later? I bought the software online via a university program a couple of years ago, so i don't have a hard copy of it. Neither do i remember getting a registration number for the software... :( Reply to tech idiot |

I didn't change them and I am the only one who uses this computer, so I don't know what happened. So I followed your instructions and it worked like a charm! The only problem is I can't find any of my files, no music, no pictures, nothing. I rebooted as a brand new computer. I am really desperate I have really important stuff in this computer and I don't know what to do. Do you have any ideas that might help me? Thanx. Reply to macuser31 |
