My screen is black

I have an HP Windows vista n wen i turn it on it starts off normal the hp symbol pops up followed by the Windows symbol but then after that wen the main screen is supposed ti turn on so i can log in wuth my password the screen goes black i can still see the arrow from the mouse if i move my finger around but nothing else what do i do ??!!

1) UNPLUG THE LAPTOP
2) REMOVE THE BATTERY
3) HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS TO 2 MINUTES
4) THEN PUT THE BATTERY BACK IN
5) START IT UP..
