It really depends on what platform you are using. Java is more of a SUN CPU platform language, and .net is more Windows.
It really depends on what type of application you are producing. If you have the opportunity to learn JAVA, learn it. .net is simple compared to Java, IMHO.
Java for Indexing and storage of data type of application,or .net for GUI or graphics rich (if I had to choose).
