Check-out properly whether its svchost or scvhost

svchost----system component. Which is needed by system to run

scvhost----may be a virus

I am suffering from a similar problem too. In my case I have noticed that the multiple copie of the svchost are always changing their CPU usage but they combined altogether take up all my CPU usage capacity. I suspected some virus but at least McAfee is not able to detect anything (using the .DAT file updated on April 21, 2009).

Another thing is that this is causing the processor of my laptop (Dell inspiron 1300)to heatup and usually when I reboot the hardware gives a heatup warning. The system however is working fine in safe mode. No excess CPU usage and heatup of processor.

One thing I tried yesterday that temporarily solved the problem yesterday (but the problem is back again today). I changed a lot of services configurations closing all the services that I do not need all the time (including windows auto update) and then I ran disk defragmenter. This all I did in safe mode. Yesterday after I finished this procedure, everything returned to normal. Today as I booted the machine the problem is back and now I am back in safe mode trying to solve the problem.

Please anybody help.

Try to stop the 'Auto Update' service and disable it. Seems to be a bug somewhere in the last security updates from Microsoft.

I already disabled auto update service. Nothing. I think the auto-update and svchost problem is an old problem already reported and properly patched in year 2006 or 2007. But I have tried this solution and nothing.

The thing confusing me is that when I go into safe mode run anti-virus and defrag the disk, it usually wirks fine on the next normal boot. But with further rebooting the problem comes up again.

I think that I am having the exact same problem as you. I fiddled around today with the auto-update repairs that I found on the net, but that did not help. I got multiple svchost processes taking up the cpu time. Problem appeared yesterday. Not sure what McAfee is doing in the background. I think that it is a virus because I am not blocked from accessing mcafee.com.

One thing that i have noticed is that my cmd.exe is not working anymore and I am not able to load command prompt.

I also have Mcafee installed.

But whenever I boot in safemode and run the disk defragmenter the system performance is back to normal for the next reboot only. Is this the thing happening with you too?

I have the same problem as you guys. My CPU usage is 100% all the time, and i don't know why. It's true that i have multiple svchost.exe processes running, but they are not occupying that much memory..
i don't know if it's that or not.
No viruses were found when i scanned the pc, i have AVG enterprise edition, up to date.

what can it be? did someone find a solve to this problem until now?

I am running into the same issue as you guys. From trial and error i noticed this being a problem when I was accessing the internet. So, recently, I decided to not use Internet Explorer and use Firefox instead because I heard IE takes up lot more resources than Firefox.

I've only done this for a day and it seems to be working so far......

Sounds like Spyware to me. But as you will appreciate there are many reasons why your computer is running slow:

First of all make sure you do not have any malware in the form of viruses or spyware. Run your anti virus and anti spyware programs in order to clear out any beasts.
If you do not have any protection these are available for free:
For anti virus I suggest:
http://www.avast.com
For anti spyware I suggest:
http://www.superantispyware.com

You need Remove junk files and your registry may be cluttered or corrupt ,but How about downloading very good free registry cleaner? Perfect Optimizer--- free for download from:
http://www.Easy-Registry-Clean.info

Your hard disk(s) may be fragmented. Windows has a built in defragmentation program but you can download a third party program for free:
http://www.auslogics.com

You may have too many applications kicking off at start up. This free download allows you to control what runs at start up:
http://www.glarysoft.com/quick-startup

Your hard disk may be getting full. You need at least 15% of free space for it to operate efficiently. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs & remove any applications you no longer use. How about removing all those pictures & music that is filling up your hard drive?

Finally, after you have done all the above may need to upgrade your RAM. So that you get the right type of RAM for your system do a free scan at Crucial to determine your RAM

Good luck with your quest..

I have the same SCVhost, (the virus one). It doesn't take up much, I even tried closing all them down, with end Windows Manager, All I get is a message saying System Shutdown (even though, you could cancel that).

Its a virus

It was a virus I had. =-[. Now its gone. I have a vundo trojan, I think it injects itself to explorer.exe....

I just reinstalled windows xp last night on a computer after it was done i installed my antivirus software. ran a scan came up clean with both true scan and a active scan. so i then moved on to the next steps i always do. run the windows updates. it came up and i installed and did about 50+ updates. IE8 was one of the updates. i installed everything and then ran a virus scan after that BAM IEXPOLRER.EXE BACKDOOR VIRUS. after cleaning it it does not work. after rebooting the pc you will get a SVCHOST.EXE error. if you do a backtrack of where its running this from u will see the fillowing
C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Temp <--- inside there is a folder it just made starting with a W
inside that folder is a bunch of mainfest files seeming to link it self to the SVCHOST.EXE making it pull info from the internet

has anyone else seen this today ?
HAS IE8 BEEN HACKED ?
JUST BEFORE THE JULY 4 WEEKEND SEEMS CRAZY

Check the spelling - is it svchost or scvhost? If it's the latter, it's a virus. In case your computer is NOT infected, check out an article here: http://www.fileinspect.com/fileinfo/svchost-exe/. It helped me when I had a similar problem.
