Oh boy! Bad news! I wished you had not told me that! It's the motherboard. Now a only a hands on qualified technician can attend to it. How old is it?

I would hope you still have a warranty, if not compare the repair cost against the cost of a new machine.

Sorry about that.

Mat,

Sometimes the cost of repair a 3 year old machine is greater than a new one.

The data you wish to preserve is on the hard disk and can be recovered and transfered to the new device. Where I live, a qualified technician will recover the data but will charge an amount per Gb on the HD.

It does not make any sense that a three year old machine should fail unless it was mistreated. I suggest that you enquire if there were any HP recalls on your model. (This may require a lot of Googling but it's worth it) Also, contact HP, explain your issue, I hope they surprise you. My Compact is 6 years old and working just great. You may have purchased a lemon.

Good luck
