Hi :)

There is a specialist forum for linux of all kinds which should be able to help
http://www.linuxquestions.org

It might be worth popping along to
http://distrowatch.com
to see if you recognise which of those versions of linux you are using. If you see your version listed down on the right-hand side then click on it and navigate to the "User Forums" for your version of linux. They should be able to give much better help in there.

Windows programs aren't written to work in other operating systems however there are alternative programs that are written to work in linux. In this particular case there are quite a few different ones but the one people normally seem to use is called "pidgin" which can communicate with people from Msn, Yahoo, Windows Live and all the rest. Try it instead and you'll find yourself IMing again really quite quickly

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

The original poster was running the Fedora flavour of linux and so this forum would help them
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/
However, i don't think that's the flavour that aspire one acer note-books are usually shipped with so you might have more luck in the general but specialist linux forum
http://www.linuxquestions.org
or use
http://distrowatch.com
to try to navigate to the right forum for your particular flavour of linux. Also you might find that Acer offer you some professional support, maybe they have even given you a phone number if you prefer that to email and forum answers.

Here's one reason why it's good to move away from Windows
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus
although these guides are written for Ubuntu it's very much the same in all other flavours of linux
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
