Toshiba laptops from mid 2007 onwards dont have a recovery disc supplied with a purchase of a laptop. Instead, Toshiba has added a hidden partion on the hard drive which contains the same files on a recovery cd / dvd.

To reinstall your laptop to the factory settings / "out of the box" settings, please follow these steps. It worked for me, and should work for you.

ALL DATA WILL BE ERASED ON YOUR HARD DRIVE IF YOU PROCEED. YOU WILL NEED TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE THE POWER ADAPTER PLUGGED IN. DO NOT SWITCH OFF OR RESTART YOUR COMPUTER DURING THIS PROCESS.

1) Hold down the power button for 10 (ten) seconds to switch off your machine.

Please note: Holding down the power button on the machine forces it to switch off. Any unsaved data will be lost.

2) Press and hold the 0 (zero) key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook.

3) When the machine Starts beeping; release the 0 key.

4) When prompted by the warning screen; select Yes to continue with the system recovery.

5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software; click Next.

6) Select Recover to out-of-box state. Click Next again.

7) Click Next to Start recovery.

I hope you find this step by step solution helpful for you. If so, rate it up.

Thanks,
Larry2488

hi duchess, i think there is no option for you to restore your unit to factory setting most especially it it is xp.if it is vista most likely it has.click start menu, all programs. look for a recovery menu, if it doestn have, then i think you need to insert the recovery disk or your windows os cd.
Shay - Mar 28, 2010 10:27pm BST
Hello. I get to to 'system recovery options' I click the last option & it says 'if preinstalled files are damaged, you can use the Product Recovery DVD-ROM to restore them' below that it says 'When you reinstall the Windows operating system, the hard disk will be reformatted and all data will be lost' .... What do I do?

ASIDE FROM LARRY'S EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUE ON HOW TO RESTORE TOSHIBA TO FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS, THIS IS ONE THING WORTH GIVING A TRY.
1)Save your files first to an external memory storage like a memory stick or whatever u may have, plug in your laptop to the ac outlet.then...

2)Shut down your computer, turn it on then immediately press "f8" repeatedly then u will see the option at the bottom of the screen "press f2 to log to boot manager" press it fast or else you'll have to repeat everything again

3)Then there is the option at the top "To access advanced boot option press "f8" ,press it.

3)Under "Advanced Boot Option",highlight the option"Repair Your Computer" and press enter. 3)System recovery option menu will show up, select country and keyboard layout then press next.

4)Then there is the option to log in as a local user so you can access recovery option, enter your password.

5)After that the "System Recovery Option" will be visible, just choose what action u like
a)Start up Repair
b)System Restore
c)Windows PC Complete Restore
d)Windows Memory diagnostic tool
e)Command Prompt
f)Toshiba Recovery Wizard.

Select "Toshiba|Recovery Wizard",then select the option that says "Restore to factory default out of box state."

6)There will be a warning that all files will be lost, dont worry just go on because all the files will be rewritten just like when u first bought it. Cheers

Hey everyone
can someone please help me
i am not a expert at naming computer components so i will say all the information i know
Im currently using a toshiba laptop which has just broke down

Ive tried everything including holding down the 0 button , clicking f8 , f12 repairing computer etc.
When i click on 0 i get an option a Microsoft windows vista come up and it says click f8 or click the tab to go unto windows memory diagnostics. when i click on f8 i get the option to repair my computer but when i click on that it does NOTHING, just gives me an error message after saying windows has encountered a problem communication

I dont have the option to system restore my computer anywhere, however the benefit of this is that my laptop aint broken and i can still access my computer. ive tried system restoring the computer by click on start - accessories and system restore but it doesnt let me do anything and wants me to create a system restore point
ALL I WANT TO DO IS WIPE EVERYTHING OFF MY COMPUTER SO IT CAN WORK FASTER AGAIN BECAUSE IT TAKES ABOUT 30 MINS TO LOAD UP AND ITS A VISTA LAPTOP. I DONT MIND DOWNGRADING TO XP.
IS THERE ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE PLEASE.

Hello Justin,
Mine is toshiba satellite u205-s5022 laptop, under bad bad attack of trojan. Since it was bought in 2006, it seems that it doesn't have a restore partition though a 120GB hard disk shows the disk space as only 111GB. Above all, I don't have the original disk that comes with the laptop. The only option I now have is to format the hard disk and load the OS(ms xp professional sp2) afresh. I need to know if I format the disk, will the laptop lose all the toshiba features? Will the laptop malfunction if all the originally loaded toshiba drivers and features are gone?
justin - Feb 16, 2010 12:03pm GMT
Toshsatellite, yes of course it will lose all the toshiba feature it has.It wouldnt malfunction but rather waiting for a complete set up.You will usually need to look for the ethernet driver, wireless driver, sound driver, video graphics driver, etc. just download Everest Ultimate Edition trial to help you look for the drivers.if you are lucky enough you can have all the toshiba features back if you know what they are and hunt them one by one or you could get them in a package from toshiba when u enter your exact model in toshiba support center.dont worry you will be able to get it working again,if you need assistance let me know, i can help you hunting them down. Read one of my post here on how to use it.link for download of everest is http://download.cnet.com/Everest-Ultimate-Edition/3000-2086_4-10499291.html is

hi kim, yes most likely your laptop has a virus, or you downloaded an incompatible software.what is your antivirus anyway? try norton 360 version 3, scan and if the result indicates manual removal, copy the file location which will be shown in the details section and you need to go to safe mode and turn off system restore.afterwards locate the file and delete it manually.the link for norton download is http://www.microsoft.com/windows/antivirus-partners/windows-vista.aspx If you have xp os, change the windows-vista.aspx to windows-xp.aspx. if you have trouble doing this then try fix it utilities professional.after updating it scan it with the DEEP SCAN OPTION.It will automatically get rid of the virus.the download link is http://www.brothersoft.com/fix-it-utilities-professional-61217.html after you have removed the virus or no virus was found during the scan and the problem persists, try doing system restore. just go to CONTROL PANEL,click SYSTEM, click SYSTEM PROTECTION,wait till SYSTEM RESTORE button is available, then click it.Just choose from the available dates you think it was normally working.if system restore cant fix it then do factory settings which i have posted in the forum at No. 4. email me me if you need some more help.

Hello,
Wondering if anyone can help me. I have a Toshiba Satellite that is about 5-6 years old, don't remember the exact model off hand though. 2 nights ago I was surfing the web when all of the sudden everything locked up. Once I got the laptop shut down, I tried to turn it back on. However, once I pressed the power button, the light just blinked and the laptop began beeping. Any idea what my problem could be and what could fix the issue????

I recently upgraded mt Toshiba L300 to Windows 7, but i have been having trouble with it and i want too do a factory recovery.

i followed the instructions here but when i enter repair your computer, a windows 7 menu comes up and there is no recovery option.

i have the same problem upgraded to windows 7 and cant restore, the recovery partition has been untouched
justin - Apr 5, 2010 4:40am BST
Guys if you upgrade to windows 7 you lose the recovery option. You need to borrow a vista os installer, if you have 64 bit then borrow a 64 bit with the same edition like if its a windows vista home premium edition you should use exactly like that. for operating systems download go to http://thepiratebay.org/ and type your operating system, but you need to download bit torrent first here http://www.bittorrent.com/ then use it to open the torrent files from pirate bay. Cheers!

I have a Satellite A105-s2716. It seems I have gotten some nasty virus that corrupted the winsock dns registry keeping me from getting any internet connection. I have tried winsockfix, etc. I am just tired of it, moved all my important files over to a usb hard drive, went to wipe when the recovery cd, and wow surprise the cd which i just opened for the first time does NOT work. Putting it in the cd drive and rebooting while holding the "C" does not work, neither did choosing to run it from within the OS when it restarted. I have pushed f12 and chose to boot from disk, changed boot priority, hoped that the recovery might be on the HDD as well, and so have chosen "0" while turning it on as well...none of these things have worked. Anyone have an idea where to get a new recovery cd for this thing? The laptop is running Windows XP

Sooo..here's my issue. I wanted to "reformat" my Toshiba Satellite A200-AH6 computer. I searched how to do it in help, and it told me to make a back up, then to restart my computer with the recovery disc, using F12 to choose to boot from the disc. I followed the directions to "Restore to Factory settings" in the recovery wizard. Part way through "copying files" I got an Error 10-F...... message, and a prompt to press ok to shut down computer. I called Toshiba and the tech told me it was a "scratched disc error." I duplicated the discs hoping that would help. It didn't.
Anyway, further trial and error with trying to boot from 0 and from the built in thing gave me Boot Mgr missing. press ctrl+Alt+del to restart computer.

Finally, at the suggestion of a friend, i thought maybe i could use an XP disc to somehow coax the computer into some semblance of working-ness, Big mistake. At first the disc seemed to be working, but upon restart, the computer now just restarts over and over.

Then I thought I'd try starting over and using what little of the recovery disc that did work to try to undo this mistake. However, now I can't delete the hard drive (it says Data erase error) and I can't do anything. It lets me start REcovery wizard, but goes to an Error: 6 code shortly thereafter.

Gulp.. anything I can do to try to right my wrongs, short of carting the whole laptop down to the shop?

Thanks for your time, it's much appreciated!
