Problem with dell laptop

Hello,
i have this problem with my dell laptop.when switched on the screen is blank.but when i connect it to a monitor it works well and sometime it comes on on the laptop screen and goes off.what seems to be the problem.pls i need help

you have to switch to the monitor and try backing up your computer then you re-install your operating system note backing up is very necessary
