Had the same problem and this does actually solve it!!

Go to the online lobby screen where you get the option to select 'Find Game' etc and then switch off the power to your router (don't just disconnect your ethernet cable). Press 'X' to exit the 'You have been disconnected... ' screen and then exit the game to go back to the PS3 menu. Plug your router back in and sign back into the PS Network. Then try COD4 again and it will work.

I honestly thought this was a load of crap when I read it, but it definately worked for me and my problem was exactly the same as yours!

I had same exact problem...then i did this. I went to multi-player and then selected HOST game first. I went into and actually ran around in an empty game for a minute or two, then i exited back to the menu and went to join a game.... joined a full game room instantly. this has worked for me every single time for the last two weeks :) try it and leave a message if it works for you too

Try this: Unplug both your cable modem and router for 60 seconds, then plug your PS3 directly into your cable modem. If that works, disconnect from there and then connect to your router...

If you are still having problems, I would consider a cleanup of your computer itself. If you are using something different than Windows Firewall, then that might be the reason. You could try reseting your router if you wish. Download CCleaner (Google it) and then run a registry and system check. This should free up any excess clutter slowing down your connection. I hoped I helped. Thanks for posting!

I just bought Call of duty 4 but i had Call of Duty 5, and i have the same problem then all of you. I had the problem once with call of duty 5 and now its call of duty 4. I think its a general problem with internet. Could be call of duty servers or your internet. Last night my ps3 was disconnected from the access point then i unplugged, like some of you said, and worked perfectly. Right now im still waiting after the ''downloading game settings'' but i think we have to unpluge the router for maybe 1 or 2 min.

I dont have the problem anymore. For call of duty 5, its always working (newer than call of duty 4 ?). As for the router and the internet: i bought my router in october 2008 and call of duty 4 is from 2007 and the problem is frequent with everybody. I think its a problem with the call of duty 4 servers. If you are using a router, go to control panel (with vista or xp) then internet and network, then windows firewall and choose the option: allow program via firewall (im translating from french so it might be something else). You will have a list. Chek the one called: routing and remote access. It means that your router is allowing other computers or machines using internet to connect to your router/network. Try that. If not try to the tip i've found is to start a split screen match (not a private match: this is still internet) then quit and go back to play online. One last thing, remove your firewall before playing. It should work if your try those three. Good Luck

Lol i stoped playing but right before comming back to call of duty 5, i tried to play on lan match - splitscreen, ''NOT'' a private match online (frezze the game and the ps3 system, if you have the downloarding game settings problem). Than fire some rounds, do w/e you want and then quit and come back to online. I did 3-4 times and it was working everytime. So when you the DGS issue, go back to multiplayer then start a splitscreen match alone without a second controler than go to online again, that's it :), good luck, give me a feedback

I stoped playing for a while, and then i tried, my ps3 was freezing when i started a splitscreen match. I was really close to bring back the game and then it worked. If you have an old routeur you need to change it. You should be able to buy one yourself if your company allows you to do it. Make sure to chek the firwall and network settings because its blocking any distant acces that wants to connect. You can fing this option: allow distance acces and routing in the network options. I bought my routeur in october 2008, call of duty 4 is from 2007 and how come i never had a single problem with call of duty 5 ? If your signed off its your router or a network option. For call of duty 4 its a common problem i belive its their servers. I think ill try to contact them, if its possible, to have more information because its driving nuts.

Read this (from the link):

I'm having problems connecting to online games.

•If you are using a router try the following:
-Set port forwarding on your router to your Playstation 3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare uses ports 3658, 3478, 3074, 3075 (UDP) and ports 80, 443, 5223 (TCP).

-Place your Playstation 3 into the DMZ of your router.

-If both fail disconnect your router and try the game. If it works regularly at this point something about your router may not be completely compatible with the specific needs of this game. Check with your router manufacturer for additional steps that may need to be done to resolve the issues you are seeing.

NOTE:If setting port forwarding or DMZ helps your gameplay you may wish to assign your Playstation 3 a static IP address inside your home network, this will help ensure that the configurations you made do not need to be redone.

NOTE: Many broadband internet modems are coming with routing capability built in. Please contact your internet service provider to determine if your internet modem has an integrated router, if it does they should be able to assist you with the steps above for setting up a router.

•Once you have verified that your network setup is not the cause of the issue you can try the following:

-Try a different server. Some servers may have other players connected to them that you do not have an optimal connection with the host. To do this simply exit the game and select "Find Game" again in the multiplayer main menu.

-Back out to the main menu and re-enter multiplayer, then attempt to join a new game.
