Trouble reading hard disk

Hello,
every once in a while there is an error reading my hard disk
also my computer has slowed down.my hard disk makes low cracking noise
i'd be really grateful if sum1 cud help me. thanx

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0
160gb hard disk
512mb ram
intel core2 duo processor 2.8ghz
