Hello everyone,

First of all, I want to state I really don't know too much about computers. I know a little but I really don't know all the names/fuctions/etc. and I'm going to try and make this say exactly what my computer is doing but I may have a few of the words jumbled because my computer is at home being stupid and I'm at work trying to earn money to buy a new one. :p

Anyway, last night my computer automatically restarted itself in order for my latest set of Windows updates to take affect. After it restarted, it came up with the usual screen that states it is installing the updates, Step 1 of 3 and then the percentage of it being complete. After completing the first and sometimes the second step, my computer will suddenly restart again and then the screen with state "Loading Files" and then come up with a screen that says Windows could not start and that it is scanning the files to repair. After doing this for several minutes it tells me that it must restart and to click "Finish" to restart. I do so and my computer restarts and then loops right back to the Installing Updates screen and once again, after completing Step 1 or Step 2 it restarts and goes to the Loading Files screen and then to the Windows cannot start and the the repair scan. It looped like this all night long and then again was doing it this morning when I left for work.

Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Opearating System: Windows Vista

Also, I don't really know how to do a System Restore and am concerned I will loose all my files. I also don't have a backup, though most of what is on my hard drive is music (all gotten in the legal way though a complete pain to import).

Configuration: Windows Vista
Internet Explorer 7.0

I have pretty much the same problem as you. I also ran system restore, which reinstalls the files to how they were before the update occured. Unfortunately, this never completes and i am left with the problem of my laptop not being able to get anywhere. I blame microsoft for sending an incomplete or pretty f***ed update, as i also know of a friend whose laptop did exactly the same, she had a full backup though so hers is up and running again.

I'm having the same problem. My computer gets stuck on "configuring updates 1 of 3 0%... 2 of 3 0%... 3 of 3 0%", shuts down and restarts to the same configuring prompt. I restored to a previous date over the weekend, but have since shut my computer down and I'm now back to "perpetual configuring." Is there a way to get around the automatic updates if I happen to get my computer restored again? Or at least skip the updates that are causing so many of us problems?

Insert backup boot disc or Windows Vista. When the boot comes up, let it open the systems. Then go to Start , All Programs, Accessories, Systems Tasks, System Restore. Click on the restore point and let the machine go back to where it was before the download/update. Don't download Service Pact 2 for Vista until the problem with it is fixed. If you used the Vista disc to boot, it has different options. Follow that to go to a restore point.

Can I use 'System Restore' even if System does not boot up. Can you Please explain to me the detailed steps to achieve so.
I have a Dell Vostro and I have a Dell Restore CD (which I got, when I bought the laptop).
Currently when I turn on the screen, System does show the light (which indicates that System is on) but screen remains blank. How can I boot using the Dell Restore CD and then use System Restore to a point, when Computer was booting normally. I don't want to loose the data nor do I want to reinstall programs.

Thanks

I have a dell Inspiron with Vista Basic and had the exact same problem you guys are having . WIndows update stuck on Configure 3 of 3, 0% then keeps shutting down and starting back up., then shutting down. Endless loop. I ended up working around it by pushing f8 at startup and restoring the computer to Factory Settings. Unfortunately, I of lost the small amount of data I had on the computer. Only had the computer for a week or so this was fairly painless. I have since shut off Automatic Updates but I am still concerned about updating vista.
Any other advice is appreciated.

Now this is either a virus that spreads quickly through the network (I am password protected for file sharing) or a glitch in MS updates. I had the exact same thing not one just one computer but on three shortly after installing the latest SP2. Each comp has a different antivirus software (AVG, FSECURE, and NORTON). 2 Toshibas and one Gateway What I wound up doing on two of the three was just restoring by choosing the off button and restarting the comp with restore disck in the drive and holding CTRL C. on one and booting directly from the disk. on the other, it was past that point and had to go into Safe Mode to repair and got msg SYS restore was already running after waiting about 10 minutes SYS restore came up and I was able to restore to an earlier point. Still haven't redownloaded that update on number three. Once it starts the endless Config of updates I have found that nothing but the above worked. Not one of the above antivirus software suites detected anything so I am inclinedto believe it may be MS's problem.

Hey,

Recently had the same issue with Vista too. I read some where else that if you install the Vista SP1 Service Pack and then try to install your updates after that, it would work. I tried it and have finally had some luck. Hope this works!

What if you did the Last Known Good Config and that didn't work? Im running Windows Vista on a laptop. This happened once already but Im not sure how I corrected this. I had disabled automatic updates (hoping to avoid this problem again) but it seems to still be running updates automatically.

Ok here is how you fix this problem.... If your pc doesn't work after installing windows update, It's mainly because there could've been an error while windows was updating new protection software,, So what you do is....
Go to safe mode... Resotre system to : before installing updates.. After this windows will try to re=install the update once again.. and the same problem shouldn't happen again...

Hope this helps.

Ok, if it got stuck in 3.. It means Something with the hardware... What you might want to do is.... (this is an Advance) Open your pc.. Remove the ram, and Place it back in. The computer keeps on freezing becuase the Memory ram is pilleed up with some virus, So you might want to either, Reboot your computer, or Upgrade the ram.

in the mean while try Removing it and Replacing it back it. it should be ok.

When ask to choose from, Safe mode, With Network, or Command promp.. Choose... either, Safe mode. or Safe mode with Network" Either... What you want is, to go into windows. Remember safe mode, Is running the basic Files needed to start windows. Once in windows.. Go to START. Then go to system restore. And choose to restore before the installation was launch. Hope that helps.

It was stuck in the "configuring update" loop even in safe mode. Since I don't have a Vista DVD (gee, thank a bunch Dell), I downloaded the Windows Pre-environment from Microsoft's website. Booting with it has the basic repair & restore point options just like an OS DVD would.

Thx for the help though.

FYI, here is the link to instructions on how to download a Vista recovery disk image.
This is not a system disk, but merely a bootable disk to allow you to access the recovery console when other methods don't work.

I'm having the same issue as Soni. My computer keeps going to the configuring updates screen 3 of 3. It perpetually updates and restarts to the same screen. I've got to the recovery tool, but I have no repair points! Safemode has the same problem, it won't go past the update screen. I don't want to lose everything on my harddrive by restoring factory settings. I'm running vista on a dell xps m1210 labtop.

I have followed the discussion as i also had the problem by installing the windows vista service pack 1 and then thereafter NOT being able to start my computer at all. I tried to restore to earlier point by using windows system restore from my windows vista DVD, but without luck. Then i tried to repair it also using my Windows vista DVD, and this helped me, after that i was able to restart windows vista as earlier.

But you must use a windows vista CD/DVD because not even restart in safe mode where possible, because the system crashes before entering start-up of vista.

It´s typhical microsoft to release an update which destroys the computer, basicly i´m feed up with service packs that dosen´t work.

After automatic MS updates of 2/25/09, text entry became slow and jerky, and the browsers crashed repeatedly. I tried to restore to a previous point, but then the browsers refuse to open and the computer is very unstable. I ran scans: no virus, no spyware. The computer shop now says that the Service Pack 3 corrupted Windows due to inocomplete installation or uninstallation. They are wiping the hard drive clean and will need to reinstall windows. The keyboard may also need replacing. Thanks, automatic updates! (This is a Dell Latitude 131L laptop with AMD processor.)

I just got a custom built comp with vista, same problem I have done system restore twice now and am very peed off, seems this is a very common problem with updates from microsoft which are causing the problem as the updates do not go in correctly, it,s going back to the shop as I've had it with it

OK FIRST OFF if u didn't build it yourself and u got it from a shop ITS NOT CUSTOM BUILT! so the problem could still be hardware and no necessarily the update. second, if ur sending it back to the "shop" its because your too lazy to try and maybe understand how the whole computer thing that u like to use even works. its all about problem solving and troubleshooting. you have the resources to figure it out but its easier to bitch and say a company sucks than to admit hypocrisy.

Try the following:

while rebooting press F8, then choose "Start Windows in safe mode with comand prompt". In the comand prompt just write in %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe if you have windows XP, to VISTA it should be the same. You can try to start the WinXP Setup CD and choose repair, when comandpromt appears just type in this line "%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" without brackets.

Hi Idra,
Alot of people seem to be suffering from not having the vista install cd and thus they are not able to access the recover tools.
For everyone who has not been able to do this I thought I would provide the repair cd link.
Simply download the file, burn the iso file using nero or alternative burning software. pop the cd in your pc and reboot, please note this cd will not allow you to install vista only repair it
Best of luck and hope this helped

Hello there!
Will that Vista repair tool help me if I cannot boot in the normal mode? I had an infected notebook and used the Windows Vista operating system restore disk to boot from it and install Vista Business without saving any old files on my notebook. Then I installed McAfee antivirus. Then I tried to play a DVD but everything crashed saying that windows updates were not installed. I went to search for updates and found 72!! I downloaded them all during about 1 hour, then they were installing but at the end NOT all were successfully installed. I downloaded a DVD-decorder Power DVD for Windows Media Player which said upon installation that it may not have installed correctly. then I left computer on and fell asleep. In the morning the screen was all black with nothing moving. I tried to restart the computer, in normal mode I could not start, black screen and nothing else... In the safe mode I managed to start, but then I have no clue what to do further... does anyone have any idea what may be wrong and what I can try to do?
