I had the same problem and I know I caused it but couldn't figure out how to fix it til now. In Tweak UI there is a place to tell it to activate when over a window. Unchecking it fixed the problem

I have the same problem. I thought it was a Norton issue and uninstalled it, but the problem is still there. I can't move around the desktop without opening a window. Thinking it's a virus. Any luck?

Did u also have more than 1 mouse in system properties? if u have 2, the second one is most likely to be the one giving problems, disable it and it will not never give a problem again...

Go to control panel click on mouse icon and look for open new page or link when mouse hovers over top it. and make sure the box is unchecked and i think that should fix it that sounds like that is what your problem is.

Yeah I got this too...from what I've read it's a non-malicious(?) software yoke that doesn't get detected by anti virus and all it serves to do is piss people off!!!!

Same problem. I have Dell laptop, Latitude 600. When I mouseover tabs in a menu, the new tab will automatically open, or if I mouseover a box, it will automatically check or uncheck. I'm wondering if it could be a touchpad issue. I've tried all of the above suggested fixes with no success. It's more of an aggravation than anything, but if I mouseover a file and inadvertantly move my hand (pointer) and it happens to me over another file, it will move the first file into the second.

Hi - just found this board while trying to determine why my Dell LT won't open apps with double-click anymore (new subject I know) - but have always had an issue with this LT and the touch pad highlighting on-line. It seems to just highlight stuff all the time. I even had it replaced back when it was under warranty, but didn't completely cure problem. More of a nusiance but still would like to know if it's a setting I can fix.
Thanks,

I have the same problem doesn't happen all the time. i had recovered my pc and set it all back to factory settings and all my problems when away even the mouse issue. i found out what caused it, it was an mmorg private sever of runescape. i was going to play that yesterday and then blammo it came back. i just recovered my computer and i don't feel like doing it all over again. i deleted everything that came from the website. all folders and shortcuts that came from it but i still have the problem. my anti virus ( using nod32) is up and running but doesn't find any viruses.

It isn't a mouse that's the problem, it's the touchpad.

I figured out my problem. I put some rechargeable camera batteries into my mouse and I think it fried it. I replace my wireless mouse and everything is fine now.

My PC has the same problem, but when I try removing the mouse, it still happens. Like for example, when watching youtube videos in full screen, the scroller suddenly goes back to the start of the video, and when in firefox, it does things like refreshing, going back several pages, and the like. We tried scanning the PC using Avast! but there were no viruses found

I found that as I was typing on my laptop my cursor would jump around or the program of the icon under the mouse arrow would engage without my hitting the left touch-pad button.

After closer examination, I noticed during these cursor jumps while I typed the cursor was sent jumping to the location in my desktop window where the mouse arrow was located.

Apparently this is the result of a corrupted driver or a virus designed to annoy.

I'm running XP

Solution:

Right Click on "My Computer" on your desktop
At the top of the window that appears left click on the "Hardware" tab.
Left click on the "Device Manager" button
Look down the tree of Device items and left click on the plus sign (+) to the left of "Mice and other pointing devices"
At this point you, under the "Mice and other pointing devices" heading, you should see one listed item (driver) if you're using just your touch-pad or one mouse.

Right click on that driver name, in my case it's "Snaptics PS/2...".
From the menu that appears when you right click on the mouse driver, choose "Update driver" by left clcking on it.

Follow the update instructions.

That's it. After you've updated your driver, reboot.

I have the same problem on my desktop. I think it might be my video card (NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT) because when I plug the USB mouse into my monitor, after 15-30 minutes the mouse starts auto-clicking. But the mouse never auto-clicks when I plug the mouse directly into the USB hub in the computer. I've tested this with multiple mice. I've updated drivers for the video card, but this doesn't fix it. Any advice?

Its not the vdeo driver, the video driver is for graphics output only, regardless od what nigty extras your monitor has attached to it.

If your monitor has usb ports there is probably a driver disc that came with the monitor with support for these. Either that driver is corrupt and should be reinstalled or the ports on the monitor are just plain faulty.

Thanks to jfr34k I had two mice in my System > Device Manager I had already tried deleting the first one (which stopped my mouse from working) quick restart and i was back to the same problem... But i never thought about deleting the second first. After that my mouse and I were fine, I couldn't use my computer it would open stuff and right click all sorts of junk I left it alone to get a drink and by the time i'd come back it'd opened 111tabs on FireFox. Thank you for the help, the problem was caused by OneCare safty scanners Registry Cleaner by-the-way. It started right as that finished and i did it again hoping it would correct the problem... and it made it worse. That being said that's the first problems I've had with Safety Scanner but it is Microsoft

I was beyond frustrated with the automatic clicking issue and called Microsoft. I was instructed to install the proper software for my specific mouse. (The mouse can do funky things if the correct software is not installed.) Simple fix that worked like a charm!
