Hello,
I have a gateway laptop,it was plugged in and charging and on, and it sudddenly just shut off and now will not turn back on. I dont know if this has anything to do with it, but i will mention that i mistakenly tried to put my cellphone charger in the USB port (haha it was dark) right around the time it shut off. Can someone please tell me what is wrong and how to fix it?

Configuration: Windows Vista

Hey there,

i dont think that your cellphone charger caused damage to your pc but i need more information in order to help you out with this question. i will just try to take a guess and can you tell me if it is starting up at least i mean can you see the lignts on?

if no then may be error coming form the battery but i would recommend you not to try to repair it by yourself if you arent sure of how to do that and also laptops reparations are much expensive but let an IT pro have a look at it

Same problem...laptop just turned off...thought the battery was dead..had power cord plugged in but no lights were on. Removed battery and cord, held power button down for 30sec, put cord back in...PRESTO! Then I put the battery back in.
Great advice...and saved me $$$$ !!

Tictactoe,
I have the same problem but on my HP desktop not a laptop. Do you have any suggestions. I assume removing the MB lithium battery will not help but I am not sure. In my case avast needed to restart after a program update, i did and it was working fine. Left (still on) for a few hours and returned to the now shut down desktop. no power whatsoever and will not power up, power supply is fine to the computer.
Hope you can help.

I saw your advice. Thanks!

I have a COMPAQ PRESARIO X1000. Don't laugh, I know that model is cheap and a piece of crap but it's what I have.

The laptop shuts off randomly for no reason even when the bottom of the laptop is not hot.

When it shuts down, it does not power back on. I sometimes press the on button TEN TIMES before it powers on and even then, the lights flash dimly for a few seconds and it shuts off again. So I keep on pressing the on button over and over and over...

You said to remove the battery and the mains supply.

What is the mains supply? I thought the battery was the power supply. I didn't know there was a mains supply.

Does the mains supply EVER have to be replaced? I looked online at a website that has spare laptop parts and that part is not listed. Is there another term for it?

Thanks for helping so many people out who have this problem.

I have a Gateway laptop and this has happened to me as well. I started about two months ago. The laptop is only two years old and in very good condition. I have alot of memory left as well.

I have two questions:

1. I tried to do the above and I am not sure what you mean by the MAIN SUPPLY. Is that the batter in the back?

2. I tried to watch a movie on my laptop and it kept skipping. I looked at the DVD and there were no scratches on it. I played it in my regular DVD palyer and it was fine. I think something is wrong with the disk player on my laptop. Do you have any suggestions on what to do to fix it or what cleaning supplies I can use?

Thanks

Hello tictactoe,

I have a notebook that has developed an issue with turning off right around the time the password is requested. It will attempt to load again after hitting the power key again. It powers down in the same way holdiing the power key down for a few seconds would, very abrupt. Also, after a lot of trial and error, I have some other unique issues that have left me stumped. The battery will receive a charge, and the computer loads and runs fine for the (extremely short) duration of battery life. I realize that the battery could use a replacement that's not my concern. The computer will only shut down unexpectedly when it is plugged in to AC power, whether its connected to the normal power supply or the serial port when using a docking station. This will occur regardless of whether or not the battery is in place at the time. Another strange variable is the fact that it will also load and operate without error while in safe mode even when its plugged in. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Sir,

I have had this problem with my ACER ASPIRE 3600 twice. It would shut down by itself and would not turn back on. There are no light indicators and the power button is unresponsive. The first time around, I just left it as it was, and when, after almost 5 days, I tried to turn it on, it turned on normally.

The second time, it again shut down suddenly and would not start. I tried to start it but to no abail. I took it to a service center and they charged a heavy "INSPECTION FEE", just to tell me that my laptop is history. The motherboard is gone and I should sell it to a junk shop. I almost dumped it and it stayed in my drawer for almost 3 months!!! Last night I took it out to dismantle it and to remove the hard drive to use it as external drive for my desktop. For no reason I plugged it in. And lo and behold! It started as if nothing had happened.

I read your "HOLD THE POWER BUTTON FOR 30 SEC" answer on the net and wanted to ask you if that solution applies to my laptop too. It is working now, but who knows when it will do that again. Please advise me about it.

Another problem I noticed is that everytime i use a DSL cable connected to the LAN, my laptop doesnt turn off... It restarts again and again. Can you please help me with that too?

Hello,

I have had this problem twice with my Acer Aspire 3680. It shuts down by itself. There are no light indicators and the power button is unresponsive. The first time around, I just left it as it is and hen I tried to turn it on after five days, it turned on normally.

The second time it didn't listen to me. It shut down suddenly and wouldnt respond despite my best efforts and patience. So I took it to a servise center. They charged me a real heavy "INSPECTION FEE", only to let me know that my laptop was history and the motherboard was gone. The best thing I could do with it was to sell it to a junk shop. I almost dumped it and it remained in my drawer untouched for almost 3 months!

Last night I took it out to dismantle it and to remove the hard drive, which I intended to use as an external drive for my desktop, and some other things that I wanted to give away to friends who needed them. Almost accidentally i plugged it in and there was the power light! I turned it on and it sarted up as if nothing had happened!!!

I read your "power off, remove battey, hold upside down, press power key for 30 sec..." solution and wanted to ask you if that applies to my laptop also. Though it is working right now, I don't know when it will crash on me again. If you could also explain a little, the science behind the procedure, that would clear the minds of many people like me and will reduce the number of quiries you get about the same tpic.

Another problem... The same laptop works very well when I browse the internet using a wireless connection through a router. But when I use a LAN connection through a DSL cable, it doesn't turn off when i try to shut it down. Instead, it restarts again and again until I remove the DSL cable and shut it down. Can you please help me diagnose both these problems? It will be a great help... God bless...

Hey, as said my Toshiba laptop turned off and will NOT turn back on. I haven't tried your method of the battery and power supplies yet because when i plug in any supply it makes off sounds sending a charge through it and burning smell. Im afraid its going to blow the mother board, if not already blown. Aside from this when i did plug in the power supply the light for power would rapidly blink and a small high pitched buzz came from the device. The computer is only 1.5 years old and is high up kept in maintenance. It is usually used 12 hours a day at most. The battery is in need of replacement but im not so sure that this is whats wrong with it. Can somebody please help?

I have the same problem with a Gateway laptop; an m-Series; an M-6750. When I pull the battery; hold the power-on button down for 30+ seconds, then plug in the power supply and release the power-on buton, the power-on button light comes on; as do lights at the base of the laptop and the internal fa starts up. Those light and fan only stay on for maybe 2 seconds and then they shut off. If you here of a solution, please send me an e-mail.

Hello,
I have an acer aspire 8920G & it's barely 5 months old.
it has similar problems. At first it would just shut off randomly and then it didn't seem to charge the battery properly and would make a clicking noise. I notice that DC in terminal (where the power supply is plugged in would get very hot) sometimes if i put the cord a certain way ... by chance it would charge, but it would be a hit and miss thing. I took the battery out and plugged in the power supply and itw worked no problem. The DC in terminal wasn't as hot as it usually got. After a bit I put the battery in and so far it hasn't shut off, but I have to wait to find out if this remedies the problem and starts holding a charge. I've already called acer & may need to send it in as they don't seem to know what might be wrong with it. Could it be that I need a new battery already? Or maybe it's an internal charging problem?

Your computer is over heating.
dont place your computer where it blocks the air vent.

Hello everyone,

I have a notebook that has developed an issue with turning off right around the time the password is requested. It powers down in the same way holdiing the power key down for a few seconds would, very abrupt. Also, after testing multiple solutions, I have some other unique issues that have left me stumped. The battery will receive a charge, and the computer loads and runs fine for the (extremely short) duration of battery life. I realize that the battery is faulty but that's not my concern. The computer will only shut down unexpectedly when it is plugged in to AC power, whether its connected to the normal power supply or the serial port when using a docking station and regardless of whether or not the battery is in place at the time. Another strange variable is the fact that it will also load and operate without any issues while in safe mode while its plugged in. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
