Sony Vaio will not boot

Hello,
My machine was working fine till lights went out now my machine is booting up to bios but will not boot to vista I am getting a bunch of dollar signs. Does any one have an idea?

Configuration: Windows Vista
Firefox 3.5.3

Sounds like hardware problems - hard drive or motherboard.
I would download and burn a Linux install CD on another computer. Ubuntu Linux is a good one to try. I would change the boot device to your CD drive, then you should be able to "run from CD" to test if the motherboard will still run a OS. If Linux runs from the CD then your problem is with the hard drive.
