Cd/w does not open

Hello,
I have an older hp pavillion 762 n,dated 2002 and all of a sudden the cd/w does not open but there is power to the unit,can anyone help me out? The cd/w is in the computer as hardware,no disc is in the unit.

Dear Ed,

All cd/w drives have an expected lifetime and perhaps this is why it is not functioning properly.

This is actually a hardware problem and changing it will fix the problem.
