depending on your age ... if you want to start properly and not getting scared by reading those books, i suggest you go to university and take programming 1 or something along that. Your lecturer will then teaches you step by step. Or find any place that might teach you basic programming. Preferebly Java or VB. If you want something instant and only relies on Windows, try Visual Basic (VB) ... or batch scripting (DOS or Python).

After a month or so, when you actually know how the thing works, then you can start studying by yourself. Best bet ... ask your teacher (computer) of where to start.
