It may be due to Eye problem in the Sensor. It will detect only DVD's and not CD's. So i think it is a Lens eye problem.

Thanx,

I just installed windows vista last week on my new computer. The cd rom drive worked. It is a hp lightscribe dvd Rw and it istalled one game. Then it stoped working. This cd rom works on my other computer but not in mine as does the one in the other computer in mine. Could it be a problem with the mother board? The connection is with a Gigabyte technology band not with a cord unlike my hard drive.
Any suggestions??

In a very rare scenario i found that my DVD drive stopped reading DVDs ( except Only a couple of original DVDs ) written by itself before. I am able to play some CDs, movies however I am unable to access the Data i had written onto the DVDs before with the same drive. This happened on the new yr day when I got a blue screen( as it would when there is a hardware failure.). I however restarted it with the " Last Good known configuration ". At that point of time i dint know that it would be DVD related issue. Later when i inserted my DVD, it is not recognized. I can hear the disc rotating but there's no response.

What the F*** went wrong with my DELL 1521 Laptop??? If I call the DELL Care, I got an answer that it is a "Usage-related issue" hance can not be replaced under warranty...

I also tried editing the registry as in the link below. But no luck..

http://www.computing.net/...

My system runs on XP-prof SP3 wit some personal firewalls and amtivirus softwares and a torrent client.

Can anyone suggest me what could be done ( I know the last resort would be the replacement ) to get it working???

I would try Cleaning the lens first

Open your PC clean out any dust

Then try it again see what happens

Seeing how it still reads DVDs I would believe the lens just need to be cleaned and are not damaged

Try updating your Drivers
If that doesn't work you need a new rom

Q: Why wont my DVD player work when I move it over to the extended display?

A: Some DVD playback software packages do not support playing on a second display adapter of any kind.

Hey dude,
The easiest way is to very carefully eject out your DVD-RW from your CPU's Cabinet and then 'VERY CAREFULLY' clean its lens. That's all I do and my DVD-RW to make it work.
