Connecting to internet via X over cable??

Hello, i have recently bought a laptop, and i would like to connect via crossover cable to my desktop , to connect to the internet?
the laptop is running vista home and the desktop is running XP home. i have tried diagnostics, 2 cables, but still says on local connection only!!
i have been told that i can't connect due to using xp home?
any help is much appreciated!
