| 8 Jason in Australia, on Nov 14, 2008 10:28:42 pm GMTTry to turn off the vista's burning feature.
It's not yours or anyones burners....just an update in vista which buggered the policies up
Go to your run command and type (start.....Run.....)
type gpedit.msc
Go to User configuration/Administrative templates/Windows components/Windows explorer
On the right pane, double click on "Remove CD burning features" tick the enabled button, then OK.
Reboot or logoff/logon to apply.
If your vista version does not have the gpedit function, do the following.
Open regedit, go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
In the right pane, if it does not already exist, create a new 32-bit DWORD value. Name the new value as NoCDBurning, and assign the value data to 1.
Reboot or logoff/logon to apply.
This should fix the problem
it worked for me

| 11 Guest Hero, on Nov 30, 2008 10:33:32 pm GMTHow do I write a 32 bit DWORD? Reply to Guest Hero | 12 J, on Dec 11, 2008 4:15:40 am GMTIf you press edit -> new-> DWORD (32 bit value), once you are in the registry editor, it will allow you to create a new DWORD. Rename it with the name given above, and then you can right click the new DWORD to modify it, giving it a value of one. Reply to J | 13 Sincere, on Dec 12, 2008 7:36:19 pm GMTI have a gatway M-series Laptop with Vista Home Premium, they want $59.99 because warranty expired last month to give me solution. It was working find until a few days ago I think it was a windows update that messed it up but now it burns media but it won't play burned dvds or the dark knight that I have been trying to watch on my pc but it won't play but it plays American Gangster fine while a few others I tested do play while others. I tried the above solution but when I type in run and enter gpedit.msc i get error message that windows can find the file.
What can I do I was gonna try using the device manager to uninstall and reinstall from gateway recovery center but I am not sure how about reinstalling it once I uninstall it so any tips on what I can try to resolve this issue.
Also ever since the last windows Update I received a few days ago the start up seems to be longer and I receive many non responding programs especially windows explore programs such as my computer or windows media player Reply to Sincere | 14 Top, on Dec 21, 2008 1:28:59 pm GMTReason for issue is an update in Vista blocked the
policies.
1. Go to Start/Run or at the command line type
'Start Run' without the hypens.
2. Type gpedit.msc
3. Go to User configuration/Administrative
templates/Windows components/Windows explorer
On the right pane, double click on "Remove CD
burning features" tick the enabled button, then OK.
Reboot or logoff/logon to apply.
If your vista version does not have the gpedit
function, do the following:
1. Go to Start/Run and in the command line type
'regedit' without the hypens.
2. Press the Ctrl & F keys on the keyboard or select
the Find/Search option and copy/paste the following
line in the find field:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Policies\Explorer
3. In the right pane, if it does not already exist,
create a new 32-bit DWORD value.
(Note: How to write a 32 bit DWORD; If you press
edit -> new-> DWORD (32 bit value), once you are in
the registry editor, it will allow you to create a
new DWORD. Another simple method is to right click
using the mouse over on the right pane, a popup menu
should display, select New/Dword. Once created,
right click the new Dword to rename it and then you
can right click the new DWORD select Modify, giving
it a value of one. Name the new value as
NoCDBurning, and assign the value data to 1.
3. Reboot or logoff/logon to apply. Reply to Top | 16 guest_andy, on Dec 23, 2008 3:34:05 pm GMTHi,
I've had the same problem, and attempted the registry-editing solution detailed in previous posts. However, it's not working for me.
My symptoms are the same (driver does not see any CDs or DVDs I put in), although I am also getting an error message about a corrupt driver (error 39), which persists when I try to reinstall the driver.
Any further suggestions? The laptop (Song Vaio) belongs to my parents and is under a month old, so I don't think it is wear-and-tear. Reply to guest_andy |
| 17 Ed, on Dec 27, 2008 10:57:30 pm GMTI can not find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
I only get HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ComDlg32.
When i burn movies they will not play on my Xbox360, samsung dvd player, or my sony dvd player. I use to just use Nero to go from an .avi to DVD without a problem. With hundreds of movies. I have not changed anything. What is my problem? Any help is greatly appreciated. Reply to Ed |
| 20 Jupimako, on Dec 30, 2008 6:38:05 pm GMTThank you so much!!! I can finally use my CD/DVD/RW player! I just bought a new HP Vista, and I haven't been able to use the stupid disk player... This is the first solution that actually worked... though I had to create an Explorer file and then do the new NoCDBurning thing. But it WORKED!! ::happy:: ^.^. THANK YOU!!! Reply to Jupimako |

| 54 man0man, on Jun 27, 2009 11:48:35 pm BSTDo you have a fix for this problem, but for people running XP Home ?
This problem has evolved progressively, at first the drive would play dvds sometimes and not others, but now virtually not at all. It still plays Oblivion (dvd) after repeated attempts, but refuses to play others. The drive does, however, still play audio cds perfectly.
Hope you can help,
Thanks Reply to man0man |

| 51 Cole, on Jun 6, 2009 5:31:48 pm BSTHi Jason,
I have a HP DV6757ca laptop and having an issue with my dvd burner. It starts to write discs but i don't think its working and they never finalize. Do you know of any solutions for this issue? Basically I am unable to burn cds or dvds but it did work before. I tried numerous software as well so I think it has something to do with vista.
Any thoughts
Thanks,
