It might be worth popping along to
http://distrowatch.com to see if you recognise which of those versions of linux you were using. If you see your version listed down on the right-hand side then click on it and navigate to the "User Forums" for your version of linux. They should be able to give much better help in there.
I would try a right-click on your desktop and see if that brings up a good long menu. If so then find your "package manager" and search for "xfce" or "gnome-desktop" installing either of those should bring back something vaguely familiar which should help your get back to whatever you had before.
