No sound after reinstalling windows xp

Hello,
I used to have sound but had to reinstall windows XP because of a virus. Now I have no sound, and can't seem to find the driver anywhere.

Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

The Solution as given to me by a friend.

1. Start the run command prompt
2. Type in "regedit" without the parenthesis. Then click O.K.
3. Go to AKEY_Local_Machine Then, System
Then Current control set
Then control
Then class
Then find (4D36E965-E325-"CE-BFCl

BCFl
BCFl

08002BE10318)
Delete upper and lower filters
Restart your computer

(4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFCl-08002BE10318) is CDROM control set ..how come this key could bring the sound back ?


i cant find windows audio service on my windows's service list (control panel - adm. tools - services)
how to reinstall windows audio service ??

I had the same problem. Everytime I went to the HP site to download the driver I would receive an error message. This worked for me. Look on the bottom of the computer and find the exact model number to the right of the s/n and under the barcode. Ex. I had an HP pavilion zv6000, but the model number was actually zv6233nr. I searched for that on the hp site and it took me to different drivers and they worked with no problem.
