Can't get xbox to connect to network

Hello,my name is chris and i have a problem. i am trying to connect my laptop to my 360 to get xbox live. iv'e linked them both to gether with a ether net cable and the laptop can detect the connection but the 360 wont even connect to the network.plz tell me what to do . ii neeed xxbox live.
