Help with linux operating system

this may sound stupid but i would like to no if i download a linux operating system will it delete windows completly off my computer ??
i have herad alot of good things about the linux operating system and would like to try it out because alot of people have siad good thing about it could u tell me if it is easy to use or do you have to control the operating system from the command line promt ????
