Le format MonkeysAudio (extension *.ape) est un format de compression audio lossless (sans pertes) permettant de réduire la taille d'un fichier de moitié sans aucune perte d'information.

Le filtre audio DS Monkey Audio Filter utilise la librairie MACDll.dll (renommée MACDec.dll pour des raisons de compatibilité) afin de décoder les fichier .ape.

Grâce à ce filtre, n'importe quelle application basée sur DirectX (DirectShow) permet de lire des fichiers APE. C'est le cas notamment de Windows Media Player, Zoomplayer, MPC et TCMP. Le filtre permet de lire les tags APEv2 Tagset de jouer des playlists dont l'extension est .apl.
