When you use QuickTime you would like that he can read other formats than .mov.Perian is a component of QuickTime or free plugin which allows QuickTime the reading of other more common video formats.
Perian notably allows format AVI the reading of files, FLV and MKV, but also others as: MS-MPEG4 v1 and v2, DivX, 3IVX, H 264, FLV1, FSV1, VP6, H263I, VP3, HuffYUV, FFVHuff, MPEG1 AND MPEG2 VIDEO, Fraps, Windows Audio Medium v1 and v2, Flash ADPCM, Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska),MPEG Audio Layer II and finally subtitle SSA pause SRT.
