VirtualBox allows to emulate completely a PC. It is as if you had a second PC in a simple window.
It is useful to test other operating system safely and without distribution (for example Linux), to navigate with security or to test a software without making one’s operating system unstable.
You can create so many virtual machines as you wish, and install all the operational systems that you want inside them.
It is possible to define - for every virtual machine - its memory, its hard disk, if it will have access to USB ports, to network, to the sound card, etc.
VirtualBox contains a manager of disks which allows you to create virtual disks in the form of files .vdi. This latter will appear as true disks in the virtual machines.
It thus allows you "to create" disks as much as you like without distributing your hard disk.
You can also use directly ISO images of CD and DVD, that allows you to test Linux distributions without burning them.
In addition, VirtualBox possesses server distributions an integrated RDP distributions. It allows to start a virtual machine on a computer, and to use this virtual machine from another computer.

Memory configuration and installed type of operating system:

Network configuration :

Virtualbox is free and open source and there are available versions for Windows and Linux.
Virtualbox is lighter than VMWare and easier to use. It offers almost all VMWare functions.
Note: If you have a Windows XP license, it does not allow you to install a copy of Windows XP in the virtual machine. It is necessary to buy a second one.

Useful to work under Linux without quitting Windows. The options are slightly limited.
