PhotoRec (Photo Recovery) is a program of data recovery conceived to get back lost photos resulting from memory cards of the camera. It can get back any types of lost files, such as video files, documents or archives which were stored in a hard disk or in a CD-ROM.
PhotoRec is a continuation of the application of TestDisk, which allows to get back lost partitions on a big variety of file system and makes non-bootable disk bootable again. You can download from this link.
PhotoRec is independent from the file system and goes directly to the fundamental data, it can potentially work even if the file system is severely damaged, even in case of formatting. PhotoRec is safe, it will never try to write on your hard disk or on other memory support which you want to get back. The got back files will be written on the hard disk where you execute PhotoRec.
Important: if you destroyed files by mistake, stop recording other photos or files on the hard disk or on the concerned memory; otherwise you would risk to overwrite the lost data. Upon the use of Photorec, you must not choose to store recovery files on the partition where they are extracted from.
Alternative spelling: photo Rec, Photo Recovery, TestDisk, Test Disk.
