Skype Rolls Out New Mobile Ad Formats
Skype has introduced several new mobile advertising formats including sending out ads, for the first time, to Android devices in 55 countries.
One of these countries is Australia; in Australia, advertisers will finally be able to run rich media adds for both Android devices and iPhones on Skype. Previously, Skype had only sold ad space on iPhones and Windows 8 devices. The new rich media ads include video and animation, the ability to touch an ad and peruse related online content, and tap-based carousel formats. Game and social media-based formats are also available with this new development. This is a big deal for Skype, and those who use its ad space, since nearly one-third of Skype's monthly user base utilizes the service on mobile devise. Mobile users represent nearly half of the total new users joining the service each month, which may have something to do with Skype being a pre-installed app on many devices.
Skype's monthly user base is an astounding 300 million unique consumers. Now, these users can be targeted for more ads worldwide. Mikaela Lancaster, Mi9 head of specialist platforms, said, "We're making significant investments in mobile and our commitment is driven by the powerful trends we're seeing in smartphone and tablet usage." Since advertisers can now access users via mobile or desktop, Skype will be a valuable investment. Advertisers can also target ads more specifically to Skype users based on anonymous demographic information.
