OS: Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2
Manufacturer/Model: Hewlett-packard / HP PAVILION DV6000

My laptop was infected with a virus. I was doing a virus scan when there was a power failure. So I reboot my laptop. Usually, the login screen would appear but in this case, it didn't and it only showed the laptop's default wallpaper. The mouse was working fine except that I can't right click. Pressing ctrl+alt+del/esc didn't do anything. So I reboot using safe mode. Unfortunately, I ended up with a black screen with the words 'Safe Mode' at all four corners of the screen. Again, I tried pressing ctrl+alt+del/esc and that didn't work. If all else fails, do I need to do a reformat? If I do have to, is there a way to recover my files (picture files,.psd files, etc.)?
I'm really no IT expert so I really really need help. Any kind of help is appreciated. Thanks.
