Dear fellow.
you are using xp with service pack 3 you didn't mention that you got the cross cable connection with your RJ_45? first if you are making a dedicated connection then you need to make sure you got the cross cable connection then it will help you out. The configuration is really simple but first make sure about the physical connection. Then simple you need to share internet connection sharing(ICS) it will called the server machine and other one will be client you need to restart both machine first on the server one where ICS is enable and then the second one after this the other client maching get the Dynamic ip from server you see the dynamic ip by click on run and type CMD and then type this command in dos promt ipconfig and enter. it will show you the ip which will like 192.168.0.2 the last number may be vairy from 2 to 254.
It you want more information related to this then visit vuhelps and you will get some useful tricks for your windows XP.

Hey Javed....

I am having a similar problem connecting 2 laptop computers via ethernet(straight) cable and a G-Router of NetGear.

Here is the specification ::

Laptop 1::(Sony VAIO) having Windows VISTA Home installed, 64bit OS
Laptop 2::(DELL) provided by my office, Windows XP SP2 installed, 32 bit OS
Router:: NetGear WGR614 , type G-Router
2 Ethernet or LAN cables(straight cables)

What I did?::
=========

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After turning on each of the system I connected each of them with the Router via LAN cable and checked the ipconfig status in each of the boxes.
for Laptop1 the ipconfig status was showing that it has been assigned with an IP(generic one)...that is 192.168.1.2 and similarly I checked for Laptop2 and I found from ipconfig command that the IP is 192.168.1.3. And obviously the gateway address would be the router's IP(generic one) and which is 192.168.1.1.
I could be able to ping Laptop2 from Laptop1 and even the "tracert" command worked. But from the Laptop2 I could not be able to ping Laptop1, even also the "tracert" command could not be able to trace the computer.
But both the laptops can be able to ping the Router perfectly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please let me know what additional steps I need to follow to make these 2 laptops known to each other.

Please advise.

N.B.:: I can not be able to change much security related information in my Laptop2(i.e.) the office laptop.
