Vista - Sudden keyboard problem. Any clues?

Net4me, on Monday March 3, 2008 05:52:02 PM
I bought a laptop about 3 months ago and it already had Vista installed.

Everything worked fine up until about a week ago, when suddenly, most of the keys on the bottom row stopped working. Looking around on the net, it seems that other people are having the same problem with Vista, but I haven't found anyone with an answer as yet.

Annoyingly, I'm having to use the "on screen keyboard" to fill in the blanks.

The only keys that work on the bottom row are : zbn. I'm also missing some punctuation keys, and am seriously considering taking this Vista garbage back to the store (over 80 miles away) and going back to XP.

Is there a remedy for this malfunction? A microsoft patch, maybe?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Vista is an OS and, as such, would be an unlikely (and illogical) candidate in troubleshooting a keyboard error. The most likely candidate for narrowing down this problem is the keyboard itself and the keyboard's cable. Swap to another kybd (if you can) and see if another keyboard produces the same symptom.

if I were a betting man I would say you have a cracked circuit board on the bottom row inside of your keyboard. It could even produce intermittant symptoms depending on the pressure on it.

However, to better present you with additional helpful Vista OS info beyond my grasp of experience, I leave you with a link to Vista-heads, a knowledge blog:

Hi,

I just had a similar problem, it wasn't the languages since I only had the US keyboard installed. I found the solution by accident, try "left or right ctrl" + "left or right shift". It runs in sequences of 3, type it twice and you will get é for /, but press them a third time and you will get a / when you type /. I'm not sure why, I can't find this shortcut anywhere, if anyone has any ideas, then I could turn this off, I just wasted an hour and a half.

Thanks!

Huge thanks from me as well, Jak! I also wasted too much time trying to figure this out. Your solution works perfectly. Now if there was only a sequence of keystrokes that would switch this Vista machine to an XP...

I have trouble with Vista and IM clients. Several times throughout the day, my 'a' key will become 'q' and 'z' will become a. Many of the number keys and other keys are also switched around. I end up having to close and restart my chat clients and then the keyboard goes back to normal. Any ideas?

I have a similar problem. I will be using a particular program and the keys work fine and suddenly some keys just don't work properly. It is always the same keys and they always behave in the same way: for example the double quotes won't work when I tap it once but tap it again and it types the single backward quote character (`) or tapping the forward slash gives me a French accented e character. It has happened in several different programs including my web browser and different text editors. When it happens, if I switch to another program, i.e. another editor, the keys work properly. If I shut down and restart the program the keys are faulting in, it goes back to normal.

I have solved my problem. I must have been inadvertently hitting the hot keys to switch between keyboard languages. If anyone is having the same problem, just go to Control Panel->Regional and Language Options->Keyboards and Languages->Change Keyboards. Under the "Advanced Key Settings" press "Change Key Sequence" and set the hot keys to "Not Assigned".

q swap with a ans z swap with w is the 'french keyboard'.

the layout of numbers is as follows:-

&é"'(-è_çà)=

I don'tk know if you install / add french keyboard by accident. press any combination of shift-alt-ctrl is to change the input method (e.g. keyboard layout)

you can right click the toolbar and right click the language bar, then click the add. see if you check the extra keyboard layouts that you don't what, uncheck them.

I am having a similar problem - im using a laptop so it is definitely not a keyboard error. Everything was working fine up until a week ago. Now randomly my keyboard freezes, and only keys that have a function associated with them (blue characters on the key buttons) respond. It takes between 15-60 seconds to go away, and the entire time i cannot type anything. I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Vista home premium. The media keys also do funky stuff, like when I hit the volume down media button it will toss: "jkl;\jkl;jkl;\" to the input buffer. Anyone experience anything like this??

Thanks for fixing my problem "annoyed". I use CDisplay, and one of the key combinations for that program is shift spacebar, so about every ten minutes I would accidentally hit vista's "make the keyboard stop working" key comibination and would end up restarting the comuputer. I'm pretty sure I'm good to go now that that is disabled.

Actually, I must amend my situation. It was filterkeys that was harassing me. As far as I'm concerned, this is another bug rather a helpful feature. There was great relief when I found out I could hold down shift and then cdisplay would work again, phew... I don't about the other bizarre problems under this subject however just uh do your best.

I am not good.

I have Vista and have lost my punctuation -- my keyboard behaves like Canadian - French instead of Canadian English or Canadian Int'l or US -- I have been to the Regional Settings and I select the appropriate keyboard, but it doesn't take hold.

Ideas?

HP wireless keyboard (I hate it -- it keeps winking-out for seconds at a time...)

Go through the instructions that were offered by # 4...when you get to advanced it will show you the keybord sequence you need to hit to change it back which in our case was Control 0 at the same time by default & that solved it for us.

just go to Control Panel->under Classic View -> Regional and Language Options->Make sure language format is set to English US or Canada -> Go to Keyboards and Languages->Change Keyboards -> make sure default language is set to English. Under the "Advanced Key Settings" press "Change Key Sequence" and set the hot keys to "Not Assigned... Then ok...if that last step does not work do it all again from the beginning and instead of choosing unasigned choose a key sequence & write it down -> press ok".

When you get out of there try your key sequence to restore your default settings. If ever you hit that key sequence by accident it will revert back. You only need to hit it again to change it back.

Good luck!

I bought a new laptop about 2 weeks ago now, it already had windows vista installed on it. I have been with windows vista on my old laptop and i never experienced any problems. My new laptop however having windows vista, is different from my other laptop. When you were on my old laptop, if you put your mouse over something in the toolbar then it would show you whats happening there. For example: if i am on a google and open another internet explorer and go onto askjeeves then put my mouse over the google page in the toolbar it would show me what i was doing on google. I know it is confusing. All i am wanting to know is where can you find a FREE microsoft vista package?

i used to get they keys changing problem alot while running XP but my computer was really old along with my keyboard so i assumed that was the problem.
I am currently running Vista on a laptop that is approx 5 months old now.
It was working fine but slowly getting worse and worse:
-Now HPQuick Play randomly starts up (with or without disks in disk drive)
-Right-Click button stops working (doesnt work still even if i plug a mouse or use my wireless one)
-Alt-Button stops working (Cant access toolbars in IE7 amoung other things)
-Menu's stop opening (i thought it may have had something to do with the Temp Files taking up alot of space so i clear it but doesnt make a difference. I even try closing programs incase Virtual Memory is getting full but no luck)
Btw all of these happen randomly. sometimes they will happen ever 5-10mins other times they will not happen for a few days but it is happening more and more as of late

Please if anyone has ANY ideas on any of these problems please email me
