Hello,

I bought a new MSI notebook which had Windows Vista on it and have been trying to install Windows XP on it. I took the original Vista WD 320GB 5400rpm HD out, and put in a brand new WD 320GB 7200rpm HD. I tried to load Windows XP with the new HD in, but it stopped. So I thought maybe the new HD needed to be formatted, so I let Windows Vista format the new HD. That didn't work. It still did the same thing. So i bought another WD 3200GB 7200rpm HD and tried it fresh. And when loading Windows XP, it still stops.

Here's what happens as i start loadng Windows XP, it starts to install, then it stops the installation and gives this message:
"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Check for viruses. Remove any newly installed HD's, or HD controllers. Check to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Then; Run CHKDSK /F to check HD corruption, and restart computer.

Also, still working with the same notebook computer; for a few days I was able to change the BIOS, but now it gives no option to let me change it. It now only gives this option "View Only Item", with just the "OK" choice. It won't even let me exit using the F9 key, which would set it to "Load Setup Defaults". I don't know what i did that made it respond this way. Is there a function key that i may have entered unintentionally?

Here is the "System Information" in the BIOS:

Firmware Information:
BIOS Build A1722IG6, Ver 1.0N, 11/10/2008
EC Buuild 1722EG61 Ver4.27, 11/10/2008

Hi Hallowed,
I found out how to reset the BIOS. All i had to do was take the big battery out of my notebook, then take the tiny quarter size battery out from inside the notebook, and leave it out for about half a minute, then put it back in the same way it came out,,, when i turned the notebook on, i went straight to the BIOS, it had reset itself, and now i can change things,, wow,, what a relief. I did have to reset the time through Windows too, not from the BIOS.
But Thank you for taking the time to give me a thought on what to do.
It still won't let me install Windows XP tho.

Thank you Hallowed

As far as the loading of windows situation you may (if you have a sata drive) have to go in bios and set the sata config to ide ,or off (disable it) then windows will finish setup. Or plug a floppy drive in and install sata/raid drive during install
