Dvd rom doesnt read application (.exe filecds

Hello,
i am surprised to note that my dvd rom (sony) ONLY reads data files and driver related files,
it is not reading any application CD, for example, Nero, MS Office etc. where in setup.exe is there.
i re-installed WinXP SP1. dont know is that a re-installation issue? please help.

Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

Im guessing thats a laptop?
if it reads one file, it should read another, data is data, there is no difference between drivers and applications. it may be a bad disk.....
but try getting updated drivers for it.
sony website should have them

I formatted my HD an re-installed winxp sp2. again the dvd rom (sony) is behaving the same manner. i can;t read data files, other .exe files, read movie files. but as soon as i try to install somep legal software viz., MS Office, Nero or Webcam software it hangs.. i have some screen shots of the errors that i get during installation from the DVD rom. it displays a blank icon, on the setup.exe files.
