Can't access shares with second NIC

unik1, on Tuesday 3 June 2008 à 14:26:25
Hello,

My company has a plasma cutter which is controlled from a computer connected to it via direct Ethernet cable. The plasma cutter is connected to a network card in the computer which has the ip address 192.168.1.5 manually set. The computer also has a second network card in it which connects to the local network's router. This card gets an IP address via DHCP (The IP address is in the 192.168.1.10x format).

When both connections are active (The plasma cutter and the local network), the plasma cutter works fine and the computer can access the internet. However, the computer cannot connect to any shared folders (doesn't see any of the other computers in the workgroup). Pinging 192.168.1.1 (the router) fails.

If I disable the plasma cutter connection, the computer can then see the workgroup computers and connect to them. Pinging 192.168.1.1 (the router) succeeds.

It seems that the computer is looking for other computers and pinging on the wrong interface when both NICs are enabled.

What should I do to allow the computer to access both the workgroup shares and the plasma cutter at the same time? Should I manually configure a different subnet mask for the plasma cutter connection?
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hello

You should remove that plasma cutter computer from any internet connection.
You can't risk data loss to the internet. Keep business computers off the internet. Keep personal disks, and drives off business computers. Get a junkie old computer to cruise the internet.

IP, subnet mask and gateway are normally the way computers determine how to route traffic. If a nic card can show that the subnet (IP+netmask) is in range then it can transmitt. If not it seeks a gateway.
