Windows Vista will not start up

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Qosmio G40-12C laptop with Windows Vista. Yesterday, after using the computer I went to shut it down. It said that it was loading seven new updates and to wait until that was finished - not to turn it off. Unfortunately, it remained stuck in the first update mode for over one hour - so in the end I turned it off manually. When I tried to restart it, I get a pane headed 'Windows error recovery', saying Windows has failed to start, due to perhaps a recent hardware or software change. It gives me two options: 1.'Launch startup repair (recommended)',or 2.'Start windows normally'. Naturally I chose the first option, but after saying "Windows is loading files', a 'Systems Recovery Options' flash comes up stating that 'The installed programme cannot start. Click okay to turn off the computer'. Next, I try the second option 'Start windows normally'. That brings up some blue writing that disappears so quickly I cannot read it. The computer then shuts down and restarts by itself and I am back to square one with the two options. I have tried the Windows recovery disc, but that starts up, then stops in 2 seconds with nothing coming on the screen. Help!

Try tapping F8 repeatedly as is booting to get into 'Safe Mode'.

You should then be able to access 'System Restore' to go back to any time prior to the botched Windows update that caused the problem.

Hi Bob,
I tried what you suggested, but it just kicked me out. In fact I attempted all the commands listed on the F8 pane and on each occasion the same message came up quickly and then shut the computer down and restarted it. Any ideas? I am trying to read the message, but it is just a flash. What worries me is that the disc drive will not function, so i cannot even use the recovery disc.

Hi,

I have just managed to decipher the blue screen which the computer quickly flashes before it shuts down. It says "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you have seen this screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or back-up utilities, check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer."

Any ideas what I can do now?

Just read your message and my daughters Vista PC is having the exact same problem. Did you figure it out? Would love to here how if you did.

Hi Bob H,

I tried everything and all advice given through this forum, but nothing worked. In the end, I found out that it was a damaged hard drive. The good new is I managed to retrieve all my files with the use of special software. So it just cost me a new hard drive and I reloaded everything back on to it. Working perfectly now (touch wood!)

Sorry I could not be of more help. I hope you sort out the problem. But stick with this forum - it is the best.

Bob, have you run CHKDSK/F on your disk? What was the result?
