Laptop will not run anything

Hello,
I ran my windows updates and now my Toshiba laptop will not run anything. Can get to the restart in safe mode then it goes to load my windows and just sits loading thats all I can get it to do.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.9
