Swapping mobos - question...

bobgure, on Sunday 1 June 2008 à 13:45:21
Hello,

Not sure if this forum is the place but here goes. I'm getting ready to swap mobos, get a new CPU, etc. but I REALLY don't want to go through the hassle of a fresh install. If I plan on keeping my current hard drive (I do), can I just swap everything out and use the hard drive without a fresh install of Vista?
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Depends on a few factors. With XP depending on the license / version you have if it is a Retail or OEM. If you have the OEM the answer is no. That software is married to your motherboard, unless it go's defective, and is changed out with a replacement of the same motherboard, or one that the manufacture designed as a replacement for discontinued model. With the retail version on the other hand you may swap the mobo's out, but you may have to re-enter your product key code and also may be required to re-activate windows. Vista on the other hand. Again depending on what version you have. I would advise backing the files up that are important to you, and just do a fresh install.
