XP - Dell recovery CD - missing files error

Hello,
Dell Dimension 1100. Had serious virus problems, including corrupted system restore. Opted for using the Dell original recovery CD. Tried repair system first time, next time to reinstall. Both times ended with "Fatal error" due to program catalog missing files. Tried renaming catroot2 folder to catold via SHIFT, F10. No joy, just went back to restarting setup with same result. Any useful tips? Thanks in advance.
