Hello,
I don't know how I got it but a program called 'Personal Antivirus' has appeared on my PC and I can't get rid of it. It doesn't show in the Add/Remove program list so I can't uninstall it. It keeps popping up telling me I'm riddled with viruses/worms, the lot! How can I deal with it because it is driving me crazy?!
I have AVG 'free' and Avira, I use Google Chrome so that should cover me shouldn't it? I've never had a problem with viruses till now when I downloaded some drivers from 'DriverMax' (As detected by AVG).
Thanks for your time.

Configuration: Windows XP
Safari 525.19

This program is free to download and scan but unless you purchase the program you cannot remove the personal antivirus program. Are there any removal programs for this out there that are totally free?

He doesn't need to reformat his drive just simply download MALWAREBYTES and run the program it will get rid of it. There is absolutly no reason to reformat the drive over this virus.

You don't have to reformat your PC. One thing you need to do is download and install to your PC the Malwarebytes' Anti Malware 1.40 and it will scan and delete (also uninstall) the Personal Antivirus. It's FREE.

Personal Antivirus is not a real antivirus program. it is a rogue spywares fake program that appeares to be an antivrius just to trap users. you have got ROGUE SPYWARE in your pc that is showing itself PERSONAL ANTIVIRUS, it also appears sime times with other name like ANTIVIRUS 2009, XP ANTIVIRUS, VIRUS RESPONSE LAB, PERSONAL ANTIVIRUS, INTERNET ANTIVIRUS PRO, etc , to remove this personal antivirus spyware from your pc, go to the site below and follow the manual removal steps or download the SUPER ANTI SPWYARE from the site below for auto removal of personal antivirus

EXCELLENT advice! Was freaking us out big time, esp with new laptop barely six months old and Norton 360 could not detect.remove it!! just a note to others...we got a flagged up window warning us of the risk of using unauthorised programs but just ignored it, thinking it was PAV up to its mischief, and bingo, all removed. Barely a 2 mins operation (with a reboot). MANY thanks.

For those who get the "send" "dont send" error message box when you try to uninstall PAV, it is probably how you have your "user acccounts" set up. Make sure only one is set up as "administrator" otherwise the quick fix will not work for you. Click control panel, user accounts and verify that only the 1st user is set as admin.

To add to the issue for the vista users that are getting the send error, simply right click on the unistall folder and select the "run program as adminstrator", this will allow the unistall to run properly!

When you click the personal antivirus icon in the left hand side you will see options of what to do with it. Under File and Folder Tasks there is a Delete option. Click it! The message about worms and hacks and trojans will not appear on your comp again! You may need to restart your comp.

Running the uninstall.ink file did not help in my situation because windows complained it could not locate the file. I deleted the entire directory (below) and rebooted and all the problems went away.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Uninstall\PAV\

I had this problem for weeks and this is the only solution. I had run Ad Ware, Spy Bot, AVG, Symantec, and PC Doctor. Only PC Doctor found the fake Trojan and was able to delete the infection, but the problem kept reappearing each time I used internet explorer. I finally decided to delete the PAV folder entirely and the problem dissappeared. I'm not clear why but I thought I'd share in case someone experienced what I did.

This DID work for us. My son unintentionally downloaded the "Personal Antivirus" pop-up, thinking there was a real threat. I showed him how our own computer's virus-scanning software would have detected it FIRST. Also, nothing was visibly effected. We just got very irritating continous pop-ups and screens (telling us of "serious" threats, that if true, should have disabled our computer somewhat, no?) We re-scanned our files to be sure and then went looking on the web for help. We also found a FREE download on bleepingcomputer.com if the Disk:C removal didn't work. Now I read here that some couldn't get to the Uninstall part, but we were able to, so give it a try. It's gone now from our computer. Good luck!

If "Personal Antivirus" is a legit program and not malware, then whats it doing installing itself on peoples computers? Especially when so many people already have anti virus software? Oh... and how come your program is suddenly "invisible" to everyone elses scanners?

Explain too,"Jessica Williams"- because i doint this popup has anything to do with good intentions!

Maybe instead of just cloning everyone elses strong as tissue paper AntiVirus, you should try doing something useful with your "programming skills".

Noni, on Jun 5, 2009 4:16:48 am BST

@ Roobo.
Personal Antivirus is not a legit program. it is a rogue spyware.
Proofs:
1: its gets automatically downloaded and installed on your pc by visiting some bad websites or using torrents. while no one legit antivirus is installed on your pc in hidden mode . (Ex. Symentic, kaspersky, Nod32, AVG etc. they are never installed on your pc uintill you purchase or download and install them manually)

2: personal antivirus popups over and over and forces you to buy it. while legit antivirus do not force but they just have option to be used as trial and after purchase and update or otherwise uninstall them.

3: Personala ntivrius dos`nt get uninstalled. you delete it and it come back again because it is coded to be alive there in your pc unitll you use proper removal method. while other legit softwares can be removed from control panel and they do not appear or popup untill you reinstall them

Good Luck

This morning an uninvited Personal Antivirus program came to bluff me about my pc infected with hundreds of Trojan Virus and Worms. It asked me to buy their software to erase such Trojan Virus and Worms and it meant that I would have to disclose my credit card identity to pay for it, right? My McAfee Total Protection which I bought from my pc store in person last year to be installed in my pc had quarantined several Trojans and I was asked to remove the generic fakealerts created by the same Personal Antivirus program when I clicked on Restore stated in my McAfee Total Protection navigation column. You'd see Personal Antivirus is created by a group of hackers who is well-versed with software programming and they are out to scam everyone they could lay hand on. Please report such problem to all bloggers worldwide that such an old method of scam has emerged again and they'd always change name to avoid detection. They are the devils and they are the angels as well. Do not reveal your credit or debit card numbers to such scammers. Do not log onto other sites to look for a purchase of Trojan Removal Tools at all. Just follow my instructions first. Please inform all your banks to freeze your account for a time being without further delay if you did a mistake. It may be difficult to check where they hide their illegal program in our registry. I managed to remove their scammers' program by clicking on "Start" at the task bar to look for "Help and Support” and clicked “Undo changes to your computer with System Restore" to do time-travelling back one day when I failed to find anything in the "Control Panel" to check for Personal Antivirus icon possibly being downloaded inside "Add or Remove Programs". It was unlikely inside there because I didn't download such program at all. Please change all passwords of your Google, Yahoo, MSN and many others once you have successfully removed such scam by my suggestion of "System Restore". To prevent inconsiderate intrusion again, please enable firewall when you switch off your computer. Do not worry about your business website as the datacenter of your hosting company is protecting your online business data all the time. Be wary of more such future scams. Please spread the news to others as I did for you. You’d see, such scammers have ready Customer Support Specialist to take advantage of loophole of the International Law concerning internet matter. I threatened their “support team”and they emailed to me very soon but I had restored my system earlier back to normal. Don’t be so kind to such rude internet marketers at all. They’re simply hypocrites! They are disturbing our peace and our business with too much climbing over our heads. If they have shops selling Personal Antivirus Software, must they resort to such filthy act to create so much nonsense to tarnish the image of their own lucrative business. Believe it or not, I suspect many other software companies are willing to help you remove Personal Antivirus are themselves behind all these business tricks. Just be careful!!!

They sent me an email finally when I threatened them with something but Anna Hamilton is a fake, see below:

I downloaded this i seen it thousands of tie so i tried it knowing it was a fake just to see how easy it was to uninstall/remove/delete. all u do is go in to windows task manager and processes the it would have the name of the folder of name of program/download/a shorter name then press end processes tree. then it will cancel it but then open up your c drive then go to you deprograms or where ever you keep it then you can delete it then deletes all shortcut relating to it then delete the start up short cut. please pm me if this helped you. $^0 relieved now?

Hi! I think your advice helped me; however, I have one question. PAV popups stopped popping up every two seconds after I ended the process in task manager, but I still can't uninstall it when I go into the PAV program file. Is there something else I need to be doing? Thanks! I really appreciate the help!

PAV free - at last - and fingers crossed!!!, on Jun 16, 2009 10:42:26 am BST

Well PAVwas driving me insane - tried everything suggested here to eliminate it - tried a system restore too to a date about 2 weeks back when all ok- only for PAV to arrive on my screen yet again - so i started wondering around my computer etc - and found that although my paid for security centre was all up to date and reading that I was protected - windows defender had somehow been switched off!!! and firewall too!! So i have obviously turned them back on - updated them and scanned my pc - and if found the evil little trojan and dispatched it to where it belongs. Hope this helps someone.

Thanks bro that worked well over everything people had on here. Even those programs people suggested just try to steal your money. I'll remember next time not to download anything that has an autorun like that. Thank you!

Just had to reply and let everyone know that this is the only wayto delete this annoying program! I tried the other ways listed and none worked. They must have changed it somehow after everyone posted them. Thank you so much for posting this, I thought I would lose my mind trying to figure it out! Try this fix first, it took me less than a minute to get rid of it! Thanks again for posting!
