No Sound for my HP laptop

Hello,
I recently purchased a second-hand laptop and it was completely wiped clean. The previous owner added Windows Vista to the PC, when it originally had XP. It says that their is a High Definition Audio Device installed, but the device cannot start. On my desktop, where the speaker is, there is an X and it says "No Audio Output Device Is Installed". HELP!!! What good does a laptop with DVD capabilities do when you have no sound?? How can I remedy this?? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Configuration: Windows Vista
Internet Explorer 7.0

If you haven't install anything on it yet i would tell you to format it and go search for the drivers online...

HI,

U have to re-install ur Audio device.
To download the driver to do it go the support website of ur laptop maker.
If u want more help tell the model of ur laotop.

It is a HP Pavilion dv5000.I have tried downlaoding a few sound drivers, and I come up with the same error code of 10, which I have no idea what it means. Someone told me there should be an upgrade that you can download for your PC to run sound with Vista, but even when I try to run an update, it tells me that I have already downladed the best upgrade for my device. I am lost. I just thought I knew about computers. lol

Plz tell the model number of ur laptop. dv5000 is only the product number.
