Dell Inspiron laptop

I have an Inspiron laptop 1500 (?). Sorry, I don't have it in front of me. My active desk top shut off and now it will turn on but if I try to open anything it locks up the entire machine. I'm sure it's some kind of virus but I have no idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
