Hello,
Alright so i have an Acer 1500 laptop and i believe it has a virus or maybe its just a hardware issue...idk... -_-
Anyways when i turn on the laptop i have an option to click F2 to go to the setup utilities, otherwise if i let the laptop be it dose not boot what so ever after the Acer logo pops up. After the logo pops up and the booting begins the laptop only has a black screen and stops all booting progress. On the other hand if i go into the setup utilities place it gives me the basic info on my computer and allows me to modify the order the hardware boots. So after i set it to safe mode, or anyother boot setting it either resarts and makes no progress past the logo screen or in the process of making the changes or not to the setup menu the speakers start to make a crackly noise and then i am unable to use the keyboard or any usb keyboard or mouse to operate the selecting options etc. Anyways any input would be much needed thanks!

Configuration: Windows XP

Two possible things I have tried with a similar problem. If you remove the battery, then plug in the power adpater, will it power on correctly? If so, connect to acer's website and download and install the latest BIOS v 3.10.

As long as the hard drive is ok you can buy what's called an external hard drive enclosure (2.5" is what I've been told for laptops) for about $20 or $30 and you can use this to transfer your data to either a desktop or laptop. I haven't done it yet but that's what I plan on doing. Hope it helps.

You may try hooking up an external mouse and keyboard to the usb ports and navigate that way...

Hey steve, hate to tell you, but you have a hardware issue. I know because I have the same exact problem. You have to call Acer and they'll fix it. But it has to be shipped to Temple, TX. I'm actually sending mine out. Anyway, I'm not sure where you live, but the number you can call for help is 1-800-816-2237. Good Luck.

I hate ta tell you but I just found out from another forum that the Aspire 5100 is a defective model. A guy kept sending his back because the keyboard, touchpad, and USB ports kept locking up and wouldn't work. Come ta find out there are hundreds of documented cases where this happens. And forget getting any help if you're out of warranty. This just happened to me last night and I decided to just take out the hard drive and use it as an external instead of fixing the problems. Sorry bud but Acer sucks.

Just experienced the same problem with Acer 9301, after upgrading bios from 1.14 to 1.20, my Acer will not boot. Found out the problem is the memory installed. I removed my RAM upgrade (4Gb-PCX2) and returned the old OEM memory (1GB-NANYA-), and it booted.

I tested using only 2GB-PCX2 RAM installed and it also booted. I tried mixing RAM brand (500mb-Nanya+2GB PCX2) and it worked.

Hope this is of help.

Well yay I get to add to the fucked up Acers!! I've had my computer since last Christmas worked fine until a month ago. It got some kind of virus after my Anti Virus expired. Windows Defender notified me of it, I downloaded another Anti Virus program and got rid of it. Next time I try to boot up it turns on.... and that's it. I can get into F8 and various other F buttons. Now it goes straight to system recovery options such as system restore and other things, I try to do the complete system restore and it say Cannot complete, corruption in (C:/). I called Acer and I still had warranty at the time but they won't cover a backup Vista cd. Of course it didn't come with my Acer, which is bullshit. However you need a credit card or debit card to order the cd, which I have neither. With today's economy, I'm a struggling 21 year old bartender, I can't afford brand new Vista. So now my $600 computer is worthless. =( I'm not even going to ask if anyone knows how to help me because I'm sure with my luck the only thing to fix it is new Vista! But if anyone has any tips on what I should do let me know. Thank youu<3

Hey nick

are you trying to retain any of your old files, like documents pictures etc, if not just do a complete system
recovery, and choose the one that destroys partition and creates new one it will bring your computer back
to how it was when you first bought it, do not use system restore.

thx

I guess I'm right there with everyone else! I bought my Daughter an Acer Travelmate 2480 last year (2007) for Christmas, the week after this Christmas it crashed. All it will do now is just keep rebooting over and over, I can't even get to the recovery options. I don't have a recovery disk, so my Brother-In-Law used the one for his desktop computer. He got everything working except her screen settings and her wireless card (desktop drivers are different). I just walked in the door from work and her laptop is doing the same thing again....rebooting over and over.

I have an acer aspire 5100. I had a virus problem which caused the system to crash. I haven't been able to download the system disk or both recovery disk which I spent $21.00. Don't waste your time or money trying to repair this piece of shit. After spending numerous hours talking to techs and spending $60 taking it for tech analysis, this computer is going in the trash.

What nerve!!!

So you order a beer and it comes warm or in a dirty glass or missing any bubbles...
Now the barman won't serve you a proper beer for your money, unless you give him extra money!
And of top of that makes fun of you as a customer cause you just had enough coin to buy one beer???!!

Yeah, I'm sure you'd love that.

I'm not sure if my matter is EXACTLY what is being reported here, but, please take a look.
I have the Acer Aspire 5610z model. It's actually my brother in law's.
the system POSTs, and then black screen for more than 10 minutes, more like 15. Then it starts up the System Repair screen by asking me for the Admin log in and password. it allows me to select a different user so I select his ID, and I'm pretty sure it has Admin privilages.
It finishes doing the repair and it goes away with no message and all I get the the screen to select an option at the System Repair screen. I tried the windows system restore and it says that there are no restore points (I know I created one when I set him up with the laptop)
I am able to get in to the Command prompt but it comes out with a X:\Windows\system 32\ directory. I see that there is a C: drive and a D: drive but don't know where to go from there.

By the way, I am trying keep his system intact. Worst case scenario, I'll External Enclosure it and pull whatever I can and then do the system restore Alt +f10 option, which, by the way, says that there are no restore points. I think this is ACER restore points.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I am having the same problem. Initially I started the computer with the battery in and got the acer screen then the black screen - then tried taking the battery out and restart with just the power supply (AC) got the acer screen then got a screen asking me to select from launch windows repair or start normally - the keyboard didnt work so I couldnt select a choice - the count down ran and selected the launch windows report - the windows load bar showed then it froze. I restarted the computer and now all i get is a black screen when it turns on = not even an acer screen with the f2 option.

I tried taking the battery out and unplugging the unit and holding the power button for 15 to 20 seconds as acer directed and still nothing. The fan appears to be running and occasionally the cd drive light is blinking but always a black screen. I know its not the screen as I have also attached a second monitor and no results and as I stated i was able to see options.

I dont even have the option to flash the bios as I cannot change the boot order as I only get a black screen.

Please advise what to do - I am not even sure if its a hard drive problem or no drivers or something disconnected etc? If it is a hard drive problem how do i get the data from the drive or how do i do a fresh install of Vista if I cannot do alt + f10?

My laptop turns on for a few seconds (the power light stays on for about 3-4 seconds then turns off everytime). Once in a while I will get lucky and it will get to the 'launch startup repair' screen or even to my windows login screen, but then turns off unexpectedly shortly after logging in then repeats the on and off every 3 seconds until i unplug it and remove the battery....btw its an acer laptop, any tips?

My laptop is IBM R50,same thing happened as yours.so i went to repaired.

what the technician did and said

he opened the laptop body and clean all the dust on my fan with dust cleaner spray and check everything are working properly(remove all ram,you should hear beeb!!) and surprisingly my laptop work now.

he told me that possible my video card going badly or loosen,so he advise me do not over starch my screen, because he found my screen hinges already loosen due to material defect.

I hope this may help you...

I had the same problem for some reason this works:
switch on without powercord attached
HOLD the laptop very tightly (place hands on both sides where the speakers are and try to bend it) CAREFULLY!!!
you should hear the dvd drive and feel the hdd moving
wait untill you get the windows logo then release your hands
if you get the safe screen mode while doing the above DO NOT release you hand you have to use your nose or have someone there with you to press the ENTER key (you wil look stupid doing the first though!!!)

I just hold it tightly until the windows logo has been on for a few seconds, but it sometimes crashes with me so you just have to go through the same proccess again, i know it's a pain cause sometimes it can take a good few tries for it to boot up properly and it always reboots when i install an update or have to restart it when it's been on at least 5 mins.
also to see if it's working when your booting up, go to the bios and take quick boot off, so when you boot it up you can see whats loading up, if you dont see the hard drive and the dvd drive you can switch it of and start again it's a bit quicker than waiting to see if the windows logo will apear.

Why then does the BIOS have anything to do with it? Is the unit not using AC when the battery is present?

I would just like to add a postscript to my last point. Having booted without the battery, and completed the installation procedure (it was straight out of the box), I shut down and reattached the battery.

Problem went away. Thanks Justin for the valuable tip though no BIOS upgrade was necessary- I was just about to complain to my local store.

This is not an Acer issue but an AMD socket issue. The reason that the laptop will boot with lifting on the left corner is that the copper heat exchanger is moved enough to seat the AMD processor in the socket.

To fix this issue:
1. Remove the large cover on bottom of the laptop.
2. Remove the screws from the fan.
3. Remove the four screws from the CPU bracket.
4. Carefully remove the copper heat exchanger.
5. Turn the screw on the CPU socket left to unlock.
6. CAREFULLY!!! remove the CPU and re-seat (DISCHARGE STACTIC FIRST!!)
7. Reseat CPU, turn screw to right to lock, replace copper heat exchanger, replace fan.

This has fixed several AMD laptops in my shop. (Several 5100s)

Good luck and be careful.

Hi, I have a aspire 5100 with also the weird harddisk problems. With AC power on and battery out it won't start. With battery in and power out it will. I cleaned the fan and did all the suggestions told here but that was no solution for me.
What helped for me was removing the silver foil from the big cover.
I had from the beginning the idea that the machine had a ground problem because of the sparks i saw when i plugged in the ac power cord. That sparks are now gone.
Probably you can also remove the foil from the harddisk cover only. The grounding problem makes that the controller won't work. That's my idea and maybe helpfull for others. Good luck.

I don't have an acer but I saw DBM's post on the acer and my sony vaio has a similar problem.

If boots up and runs fine. You get no power lights or wireless internet unless you pull up or push down gently on the left front corner. Can't be the processor because it runs great either way.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

This was undoubtedly the fix that worked... the person that said it was an AMD socket issue was completely right. i opened the socket, and it is locked, but not completely seated. it's hard to turn the screw after reseating it, but i was able to get it turned and locked and used some new thermal paste on the cpu b/c the cheap thermal pad they had on there had a hole right through it. also, cleaned out some moth balls in the fan and used an eyeglass wipe to clean off the cpu before putting on the paste.

after putting it all back together again, it booted right up to my amazement...

great solution dbm. i would not recommend this to the novice user.

FYI... I was having the same problems with the computer not booting. It would get past the normal ACER prompt and then crap out with the BSOD. I would reboot and then it would give me the option to start repair mode or start windows normally. Either way, It wouldn't work, it would either do a system dump or the aformentioned cycle all over again. After reading this thread, I simply took the backing off... took off the fan cover and actually cleaned all of the lint and dust that had accumulated (it was a significant amount, which makes sense because it was always running hot) and then replaced everything. Then I booted the computer without the battery and so far it booted into the repair mode and I'm actually to the password screen.. I'll keep posted if this continues to work... Thanks so much thus far...

Cleaning the fan worked for me as well. I was trying to run eRecovery and what was happening was it would get about 25% in and then the laptop would just shut off. No error message, no blue screen, nothing, it would just turn off. It was also running very hot and then it wouldn't allow me to power back on for a few minutes, so I suspected it was overheating but not being very hardware saavy I didn't put 2 and 2 together and understand that the fan was the problem.

I took off the cover, unscrewed the fan, and cleaned it. I also found what can only be described as a "slab of dust" blocking the exhaust port (which you can't get to/see unless you unscrew the fan). Cleaned everything thoroughly, didn't mess with the CPU or RAM (although that would have been my next step), put everything back together and booted up. The next time through the eRecovery ran fine and the laptop is also running noticeably cooler.

thanks guys for the suggestions.

So i have an acer Aspire 5570 and when i power it up, it goes to the acer screen, but then the screen turns black. If i wait long enough, an error message will come up and tell me that i am missing the file /system32/hal.dll. I have tried booting from a Windows disc... no luck. I have also gone through the BIOS, but it wont let me do anything, it freezes. after taking the bottom plate off my hard drive bay, i started it up again, and the same things happened, but my hard drive makes ticking noises, different from those it should be making. My best guess is that the reader-head on my hard drive is broken, and this is why it won't boot. I have yet to actually test my hunch!

I've had this problem for a very long time. Two years or so. Finally I found a solution(s) based on trial and error on mine and others. The Aspire 5100 indeed has a major hardware flaw that engineers have overlooked and moved on. Rightfully so, due to a steady incline of new technology (AMD Turion 64 x2) and fished as much as they could come out with. Supply and Demand.

So:

Problem #1: Two Loud Beeps during HDD load

This happened without warning. My HDD displayed as: STxxxxxxxxxxx ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' '
the only option is F1 Setup & F2 Boot Menu

Solution: I Waited for 10 minutes while in this state, and rebooted (ctrl+alt+del).
The system started up with no problem. Unfortunately this was the method I had to use for awhile untill...

Problem #2: No possibility of boot

Solution: Jam a small stack of three (3) plastic cards (I used Gift cards from any store that sells them. It's free!) on top of the Hard-drive. Screwed the lid back on tightly, and reboot. To my amazement the darn thing worked with no problems or delays.

I've attempted many methods from bending the case to pulling the bastard apart, screw by screw! Nothing.
Others found ways of sodering connections back to getter or reinforcing the motherboard. Few triumphed many failed.

I'm not saying that this is the only FIX, but in my case it worked. I hope this helps.

Currenlty, I'm running Ultimate Ubuntu 2.0 with absolutely no software problems. I'm leaving Vista and XP to the wind.

Based upon your fix with the three cards in the drive bay, I assume this laptop will not boot without the cover in place? I am in the process of trying to repair this 5100, but the bios does not see the drive. Changed the drive, but no joy. put the drive on another pc as external...no problem. However, it IS missing the cover.

The problem with my Acer 5100 was a faulty hard drive controller. I payed Laptop Recuer service to replace it and they did at a cost of $250. It now works. Before this I tried nearly ever suggesred solution and none worked . I only wish I had the skill to do the replacement myself but that is the likely problem to the boot up problems a lot of you are perplexed with.

without the battery and ac chord connected theres no led power at all no fans spinning whatsoever..

do you think its a board problem?? processor??

My Acer 5100 computer has been a pain in the tail for over two years now. I have had many of the same problems listed here. I sent it back to Acer 2 times and I sent it to the circuit city repair people (actually: Nexicore) 3 or 4 times now. It always works fine for a few months and then starts getting weird (crashes), and then eventually becomes so slow that it's essentially inoperable. A few times, the transition has been very quick, as in under 24 hours. Working fine to ~inoperable within a few hours! Just this last time, it was a "general host process" error, and the comp wouldn't boot up. I just ordered the recovery discs from Acer (30 bucks, thanks jerks!) and reinstalled everything and the computer has been working great for the last couple of days. (obviously, this process wipes your harddrive clean, so back yo stuff up). I have little confidence that this will last, but for what it's worth, it did solve the problem. So call Acer up, order the discs. You'll get them in a week. Follow the instructions that come with them and hopefully the machine will work again (at least temporarily).

I have also had the same problem. Mine would start up fine, but once it got to the load screen for Vista, it would give me the blue screen of death and restart. To fix your problem, try starting it up and push Del immediately after the Acer logo goes away. That'll take you to a screen that tells you what you can do. Push F8 to take you to the next screen. Once you're at that screen, go to the selection that says "Run Last Known Good Configuration - Advanced", or something like that at least. Choose that one. That should get it to work, but not all the time. Sometimes you might have to follow the same steps, but instead of booting from last known good configuration, choose to disable restart on system failure. Then let it run through and crash, and then run the last known good configuration again. That almost always gets it to work. Once you get it to load, I recommend keeping it on all the time. Just plug it in, but take out the battery, otherwise you'll kill the battery, too. Then order an external hard drive, back up your important files (music, pictures, files, etc.) and reload the operating system. Just use the utility on your desktop to restore computer to factory default. That'll reload the operating system, but also clear everything on the C:\ drive.
And btw, here's the external hard drive I got. It's a Seagate with 250GB of space for only $35.

If you want to keep all your files, you'll need it.
Hope this helps!

How do i remove the copper heat bracket? it seems to be glued down in 2 places, is this correct? it seems to be glued to the actual white coloured cpu cover that I'm assuming i need to remove, would it be possible for you to send me photographs with instructions as i think this is the solution to my problem but im not sure how to carry it out, thanks

Had this problem before.

before you go out buying a new computer or opening yours up

hold down alt-f10 as it is rebooting

on my acer model and in the book this will format everything and re-do everything to put it in a state as if you bought it from the store.

so yes, you'll be starting alll over from the beginning, but at least you wont need a new computer.

All acer laptops will not boot up (Just black Screen) after you update the bios with 1.20 (from 1.14) IF you have 4GB ram installed. The new bios does not recognise 4gb ram.

Take out one of the 2gb sticks and the computer/laptop will boot, no problem.
